18 - BROOKLYN FIGHTER OF BULLS ORRIED Sidney Franklin no Longér a Box Office-Attraction Madrid, Sept. 19 (A—Hard luck has followed Sidney Franklin this summer, his second season bucking the hard game of bullfighting in its homeland, but the Brooklyn torerd keeps a stiff upper lip and a ready sword and hopes for a better | break. | Franklin was a fine box office at- traction last year when he first in- vaded the Spanish arena. Fans flocked to the rings where he was billed to appear because an American bullfighter was a greuu curiosity. And Franklin had the stuff. He surprised the Spaniards by beiz 8o good. He is still good, but he is no longer a curiosity. To the Spaniard, now that the novelty has worn off. he is just another bullfighter—and Spain is full of bullfigh A man hasg to be good ever to fight ip a big ®ing at all, but he has to be brilliant to build up a follow- ing that will pay good money to see him whenever-he is Dbilled. Strictly Business Matter Bullfighting is a professional, money-making business. The “Tex Rickards” of the game sign fighters who will draw a gate. Franklin has had only half a dozen contracts this suymmer be- cause he is no longer accepted as a foreigner but simply on his merits as a bullfighter—and there are quite a few others considered be:- | ter figheers than Franklin So the promoters have given | preference this summer to native | sons who draw more crowds Franklin has thiis slight have been killed and more than a dozen gored terribly. Franklin has demonstrated his skill and nerve. But it is not rare for a Spanish bullfighter to be gored and there are no seasons in which some are not_killed. So the “aficionados,” or fans, tak: the Americ@p's injuries as a r tine part of what they pay for and | in the final analysis they judge him | by whether, from their standpoint he is a er bullfighter than th home bo, Their er this summer is no Foreigners Not Wanted And they add that no foreign r can ever be the sort of bullfighter a Spaniard is. That is why Franklin, courag:- ous, skillful, powerful in the death- thrust—but without certain graces and lithe posturings natural to his Spanish colleagues, and, after all, a foreigner—has not had more suc- cess.
