Second Section NEW BRITAIN HERALD [+ NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, SATURDAY, AUGUST 09 &0, 1930. JOBLESS COUNTED BY CEASUS BUREAU Figures Do Not Include Those Temporarily Idle, However | Washington, Aug. 23 (UP)—Th» nation's unemployed numbered 2 508,151 when the census was tak- en in April, the census bureau an- nounced today. This was 2 per_cent of the coun- try's total population and 5.2 per cent of the estimated number of workers. Five out of every 100 per- sons who wanted work job- less. The figure includes only thosc withougg jobs, able to work and| seeking employment at the time the census’ was taken. It does not in- | clude several other classes, such as | those with jobs who laid oft without pay These additional gro 1v will indrease the total somewhat, though the bureau said the figure announced today covers the proper portion. The count of unemployed was the first of its kind ever unde: this country, and provides real basis for estimating the extent | of hardship resulting from the busi- | ness depression Previous unofficial unemployed | estimates had ranged from 3,000,000 | to 6,000,000, and republican leaders were quick to take advantage of th fact the census showed = amber than administration had charged Republicans Gratified We at last have an statement of this question Hatfield, repn., W.
