NEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, FRIDAY, JULY 18, 1930. NORRIS MAY RUN AS INDEPENDENT Duplication of Names Problem On Ballot Still Unsolved Washington, July 18 (UP)—An- | nouncement of the withdrawal of | Senator George W. Norris from the | republican primary campaign to run for reelection as an independent was expected to be made in Nebraska within 24 hours, it was learned here today on high authority. Norris is being squeezed out of | the republican primary through the | action of a Broken Bow, Neb., gro- cery clerk of exactl§ the same name who paid $5Q to file as an opponent of the veteran senator. A decision as to how Norris will proceed to meet the confusion which would result from two identicall names on the same ticket must be | made before midnight under a rul- | ing of the Nebraska secretary of state. The senator believes his only chance lies in withdrawal and has ko advised his managers in Ne- braska who have authority to make the final decision Preparing Ballots Court action to straighten out the tangle would probably come too late ! to have any effect upon the situa- tion inasmuch as the ballots already are being prepared to be sent to the | printers. | The extraordinary’ fight being made against Norris is one of the chief topics of political discussion here. Tt is being connected in politi- cal talk with the equally strenuous campaign being made in Montana against Senator Thomas J. Walsh, democratic leader. Norris and Walsh have been the chief leaders in the fight against public utility and power interests. Most of their ene s in recent vears have been devoted toward legislation to maintain the govern- ment’s influence over the develop-| ment of electrical energy on the rivers and streams of the nation Both senators are so outstanding in their home states that no prom- inent men had dared to oppose them in recent elections. Discussing the matter, Senator Black, democrat. Alabama, who contested against the power inter-| ests at Muscle Shoals, said today: “The interests can be republican or democratic. wet or dry to serve their own purpose. They care noth- ing for the fake issues which they raise to blind the people.” THREE GANGSTERS ARE ELECTROCUTED Third to Die Affirms That Pals Were Innocent Ossining, N. Y., July 18 (UP)— Three Buffalo gunmen paid the state’s penalty for murder last night and died within 20 minutes of each other in the electric chair at Sing Sing prison. The men were Alexander Bog- denoff, Max Rybarozyk and Stephen Grezchowak. They were convicted of killing Ferdinand Fechte, restaurant proprietor, during a holdup. Although Boddenoff’s attempt to assume all the blame failed to re- sult in reprieves for the others after executions were postponed two weeks, Rybarczyk and Grechowiak maintained their innocence to the last. Grezchowiak, a World war vet- eran, was led from his cell at 11:01 p. m. He was smoking a cigarette as he entered the death chamber ac- companied by the prison chaplain, the Rev. John P. McCaffrey. He asked Warden Lew permission to finish th and inhaled one deep puff. gat down in the i Claims Innocence “Take a good look. gentlemen.” he said, addressing the witnesses. “Keep your eyes open. You are see- ing an innocent man die.” The straps were adjusted and Ex- ecutioner Robert Elliott turned on the current. At 11:06 Grezchowiak was pronounced dead Rybarczyk also met death with firmness and with protestations of innocence He strode beside aid “I'm an innecent man. I'm going to leave you in a few minutes." He was dead at 11:13 Then came Boddenoff, slowly as if to utilize the chair and walking what little | {could be heard as | dar C time was left him in life. He too had a speech. Defenfls Companions “Gentlemen, you are representa- tives of the state of New York. You have just seen them kill two inno- cent men. I have tried previously to | save them but my words were no good. “As I stand before this funny looking piece of furniture, I swear before God that they are innocent.” He walked to the chair, turned again, and said: “Well, why pray now? I don't give a damn.” But the priest's whispered words Boddenoff met death 'AVIATOR WILL SCATTER GRAHAM'S ASHES TODAY Funeral Services For Man Who Lost Life In Air Malfl Plane Crash Are Simple Los” Angeles, July ashes of Maurice Grahar and courageous airmail pilot be scattered tonight from flving high over the where he went to hi months agc in a Graham's body. 1 y, Utah, was br Los Angeles last n air express plane 18 (UP)—The skilled wiil ated n his best Simple fu be held this oon t and military organiz: Graham's ashes w and urn and taken into th Kelly, pilot on the airmail plane from L Salt Lake City, will with him.
