WAGECLT FOR IRON WORKERS Pay Readjustment af Berlin Construction Plant Arbitrated SILENGE ~ CHURCH BELL Policeman to Watch For Youths to Prevent Ringing of Independence Day Welcome—Carbo Property to Be Sold at Auction, Settlement of the wage controver- #y between officials of the Berlin Construction Co., and its employes, occasioned by the proposed cut of 20 per cent in the present wage sched- ule, was reached yesterday after the matter had been arbitrated Representatives of the employes sccepted a compromise adjustment which calls for a 10 per cent reduc- tion to become effective next Mon- day morn e first propo: ith flat reje e employes a appeared to be amicable s The officials claimed t business conditions did not the scale of wa a al of the company on on the part d for a time there little hope of an at present warrant s which had been maintained by the company while the employes countered with the sment that the rejected proposal meant the loss of one full day's per week and they felt that a cur- tailment of the working hours would have the same effect as the cut but would not mean a loss to them should business return to normalcy. The plant has been affected by the lull in business and officials stated today that either wages had to be reduced or operation of the plant suspended until hetter conditions were experienced Bell Will Not Ring Determination on the part of the board of trustees of the Kensington Congregational church to prevent the recurrence of any actions on the part of the youths of the town as have been experienced by that hody in the past, due to the desire of the boys to ring the church bell as part of the celebration of the Fourth of July has brought about the retention of an officer who will be stationed at the church with orders to hail anyone caught about the premises into court. The boys have resorted to acts of vandalism, it is said, and the church has been put to unnecessary expense because of some of the acts commit- ted by the overzeal rouths, In years past the church bell was Tung at midnight of July 3 with the permicsion of the board of trustees but this privilege was denied some time ago when a party of youths en- trusted with the keys of the edifice spent the greater part of the night throwing the new cushions about as well as tearing down two of the | doors of the building. Last year several of the youths of the town were hailed into court for their part in trying to enter the | church and the board wishes to warn these and any others who are pos- sessed of the same desire that any such action on their part will be dealt with severely. Warning Signs Placed A force of men from the state highway department were engaged today in erection of signs along | rom Upson’s corner to the ilroad underpass. The signs were in e nature of warnings to autoists approach to dangerous in- tions and of the presence of the underpass. Much favorable comment on this action was heard from residents of the vicinity who have long looked for some seri accident because of the tendency of drivers to speed along this section of road unmind- ful of the danger to themselves and to others.
