After a series of “accidents” the car stops on a lonely road and Mr. Carew catches Jacqueline in his arms and forcibly kisses her, protesting his love for her. A mob that had attacked tram- cars, burning four of them and wrecking five more, became com- pletely unmanageable, and after armored cars and troops had been called to the rescue of embattled police the officers fired into the mob. The riots followed proclamation of a *hartal” throughout the city in protest against the convictions of the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Mayor Sen Gupta. The police on duty telephoned for reinforcements, after the firemen, already called to the scene, had been able to do little against the crowd.
