CANADIENS BEAT NEW YORK RANGERS Montreal fo Oppose Boston for Io¢ Hockey Championship New York, March 31 (#—For the first time since 1925, when they lost to Victoria, B. C., Les Canadiens of Montreal are finalists in the strug- sle for the Stanley cup, emblem ¢f he world’s professional hockes { championship. And the New Yo Rangers, finalists for the past two scasons arc out of the race. The Canadiens gained the honor last night with a stirring triumph | over the Rangers, 2 to 0, in the sec- ond game of their serics and now will meet the Boston Bruins, pres- ent holders of the trophy, in a three game final series. Previously the Canadiens had defeated the Rangers, 2 to 1, in Friday's record- breaking overtime struggle at Montreal. Boys’ Club Zembrowski . right fm“nrl McKinley Athletics Cronin Kerelejza . Powell Goffa . Malloy center 3 Compagnone . right guard Winters .... left guard Tonight, the Boys’ club basketbail team of this city will attempt to wind up a rather poor season with a victory over the fast travelling McKinley Athletics of East Hart- ford. The local team has been play- ing a better brand of basketball dur- ing the last part of the scason than it was during the first part and hopes at the club are high that ths game tonight will result-in victory. The visiting delegation has ap- peared in this city before during ths present season. It was defeated by the Burritts at the Stanley Arena during the winter. Since that game, the Athletics have been cleaning up all opposition in their path and the club team is up against a strong contender tonight. The Athletics will have its regular squad in action with a quartet of strong substitutes. Cronin and Pow- ell will be at the forwards with Mal- loy at center. Farrell and . May will play the guards. This combina- tion has borne the brunt of the en- tire season’s campaign and all are veterans who play nice passwork and are efficient shots. The sub- stitute quartet consists of Mason, J. May, Thayer and Poscher, any on»s of whom is well able to fill in at the regular positions. The club team will lineup with Zembrowski and Kerelejza at the forwards. Goffa will play center with Compagnone and Winters in the guards. The substitute force will consist of Boukus, Rametta and Paluch. Preliminary Game A feature preliminary game has ben plarined for the night when the Boys' Club Reserves tackle the South Church Reserves. These two quintets are natural court rivals and plenty of excitement is in store for the fans who witness the contest. The preliminary will start at’ 7:80) o'clock with the main contest at 8:30 o'clock. Dancing will follow the final game. Farrell The final serics is due to open at Boston next Tuesday. The second zame will be plaved in Monteral Thursday night and the third, if necessary, in Boston Saturda Speed and more speed, the key- note of every Canadien team, com- ibined with an airtight defense, brought the victory for the “Fly- ing Frenchmen.” The Ranger: fighting a gallant battle from start te finish, found every attack broken up as the big Canadien defense men drove into their formation and the Montreal forwards ani outskated them so thoroughly that they could go down with the puck for a shot and still check back on he Ranger returns, and behind this defense was Goalie George Hains- worth, doing his task in perfest form and as coolly as if it were only a bit of practice. Two over-time games of rccord duration last week apparently ha not slowed the Canadien players at all while the Rangers, somewhat battered at the outset of the play- offs, scemed off form after Iriday’s two-hour strukgle. loth of the goals came in the opening period, only a minute apart. And both were due in part to the playing of Nick Wasnic, wha was made the *goat” of the first ne of the serics. After about 14 minutes of play, Leo Reise, Ran- ger defense man, was penalized and Wasnie and Bert McCaffrey took advantage of the opéening to score. McCaffrey put a perfect pass on Wasnie's stick and the wingman had little trouble in shooting the goal. A minute later, Wasnie push- ed a pass out of scrimmage to Pete Lepine, who lifted the puck neatly over Goalie Roach's shoulder. Throughout the remainder of the game, the Rangers struggled i n while the Canadiens, led by untiring Howie Morenz, found | their besth defenwz in a good attack and threatened morc often thaa the N ‘orkers to score. 4 n 1 t : i ANy Detroit Tigers Meet Montreal Club Today Daytona Beach, Fla., March 31 () —The Detroit Tigers were scheduled to meet the Montreal club of the International league here today in a game which should be a brotherly affair.
