This problem was as follows: “TIlow can a team make three triples, one-double, and two singles and steal two bases in one inning without scoring a run?” Autographed copies of Rip's best-selling book, “Believe It or Not,” were of- _fered to those sending in correct answers. Here is the proper solution as furnished the Herald by Rip himself: “No. 1 man'triples and is thrown out at the plate. No. 2 man does likewise. No. 3 man double No. 4 man singles but No. 3 man does not advance. No. 3 and 4 execute double steal. No. 5 man singles, but other runners cannot advance and bases are full. No. 6 man hits long safe drive. No. 3 loafs, falls, or is in some way incapacitated between third and home, holding up scori It either No. 4 passes No. 3 or No. 5 passes No. 4 AFTER No. 6 reaches third, or if No. 6 passes No. 5 or is tagged out between third and home before No. 3 scores, he is credited with a triple. These are the only possible ways. Believe it or not.” As said above, Ripley was buried under an avalanche of some 10,000 answers on this particular problem, but only 103 read solved it correctly. The only reader of the New RBritain Herald who achieved success w. E. Patker of 57 Harrison street, and a copy of Rip’s book is being forwarded to him.
