4 Renewefl Rumblings of Vesuvius “ Cause Alarm as Villagers Return Fervent Folk Erect Shrines on Street Corners, Con- vinced That Patron Saints Stayed Lava. Naples, June T UP—Renewed ipasms, deep within the crater of Vesuvius, today disquieted residents of the villages about its base. The illagers late yesterday returned to .heir homes and erected thanksgiv. ing tabernacles for their ' patron saints on atreet corners. The Vesuvius observatory had re- ported the lava flow stopped and that the pools of white hot rock were rapidly congealing when the new subterranean tumult was felt. The explosions within the volcano then shook the ground so that doors and windows miles away rattled. little fountains of liquid fire sprang up within the crater and lasted for several minutes and many objects in the shape of lumps of molten lava and boulders were flung up from the cone. Terzigno proper was hardly touch- cd by the lava flow, which encircled the city. The inhabitants believed Saint Gennaro, patron saint of Na- ples, had intervened in their be. half and improvised tabernacles at the street corpers for images of him and other saints. Flowers were placed in front of the shrines and religjous feeling was at its height. A tabulation of damage caused thus far showed that 50 houses were destroyed, these containing 147 habitations occupled by 78 families. One hundred and 25 acres of land cere covered by lava, 90 being vhieyard and a farm land and the remainder forest.
