With the feams of the first div on 50 closely bunched and the daily rambling of positions, the next few weeks should give some insight into what fighting spirit the Texan added to the club. When Hornsby was first corralled {by the Wrigley millions, many opin- ions were voiced that the Rajah was just the necessary batting im- petus the Bruins needed to win the pennant. But there were also quite a few who thought Hornshy would be more of a handicap than a hoon to Mc- Carthy’s clan. They pointed to his storm record with the Cardinals and New York They asked why the Boston B were so cager 1o part with him. Jack Hendrick, manager of the Cincinnati Reds, recently was quot- ed to the cffect that Hornsby would do any team more harm than good. He went further to say that he thought Maguire, the man who went to the Braves for Hornsby, would have been of inuch more value to the Cubs right now, his better field- ing more than effsetting the extra batting Hornsby would furnish. To make his argument more forceful he said he'd rather have his Hughie Critz than a dozen Hornshys. Bat Battalino of Hartford is to- day the state featherweight cham- pion of Connecticut by virtue of a decisive win on points over Eddie Lord ot Waterbury in a 10 round battle staged as the star attraction on a fight card at Bulkeley 8tadium in Hartford. Lord appeared to be drawn and weakened by the process of making the required weight for the battle while Battalino was forced to be cautious because of Lord's ever dan- gerous milli Battalino was far from being the “ball of fire” which he usually mimics es he swarms all over his opponents, but he out- punched and e\en outboxed Lord throughout the 10 rounds. Battalino won seven of the 10 rounds last night, two were even and Lord was accredited with one, Battalino scored the only knock- down of the fight in the sixth when lord, going to the canvas, elected to take a count of nine before get- ting up. Rain which started falling just as the show was to open up, made the floor to the ring alippery and both boys were hampered in their work. Battalino failed to take advantage of several evident openings throughe out the fight, his cautious policy holding him back and making him satisfied to wia the battle on points. Battalino himself went down on his hands from a punch to the back of the head in the second round. Johnny Vacca of Boston defeuted Al Beauregard of Taftville in the semi-final which was the best fight on the card. Both boys hammered away at each other with everything they possessed and the bout will go a long time unequalled for punches thrown and thrills. Johnny Clinch of this city knock- ed out Mickey Angelo of Hartford in the second round of their sched- uled six round encounter. Powerful left drives to the body finished the Hartford boy. Mickey Flahive of Hartford end- ed his battle with Whitey Dawson of Brooklyn rather sudden fash- ion when he planted a stiff right cross to the jaw in the second, Dawson got up at the count of nine but he went down again. Referes Henry Garrity stopped it, Al Delmont, Jr., of Boston knock- ed out Lester Oberheim of Spring- field in the fourth and last round of their bout. It was a pretty fight while it lasted. Joe Marto of Bos- ton knocked out Al Ricard of Mid- dletown in the first battle of the night. The feature hout was the third on the card due to the rain and many late comers missed the fight entirely.
