SAVING WINDNLLS OBLECTOF ROLP Freach Organizs -to. Preserve Quaigt O Stractures Raint-Valery-8ur-Somme, France, May 17 »—O0id windmills that have ground grain and decorated Freach landscapes for centuries are disap- pearing . rapidly, but fashion bids fair to save those that are left. Probably 300 mills remain in France. A few still work, but many ar: abandoned. Most of the owners are poor, #o art lovers, antiquarians and historians are raising funds to buy or subsidize the mills. An American painter and etcher, Herman A. Webster, living in ¥rance, is vice-president of the new- 1y formed “Society of Friends of the Old Mills, organized by Dr. Paul Helot of Rouen. It has an office here. ‘The oldest known windmjll is “the Mill of the Standard” at Hardifort, near Cassel, where a battle was fought in 1328. The French battle flag was run up on the mill by the French commander, the Duc d'Alen. con. The old Moulin de la Galette, part of a Paris dance hall in Mont. martre, bears the date 1295, but the authentiicty is doubted. An anicent government tax -on windmills, collected whether = they ran or not, caused the destruction of many milla. Peasants tore them down to avoid the: tax. The entire score is melodious to an extreme and is con-( sidered above a par with respect to| affairs of this sort. With a well chosen cast and a chorus known for its musical ability, full justice will be done to the numbers, according to the director. Some of the high spots in the melody are: ‘When You Are Fall- ing in Love”, sung by Otillie, Miss Grace Hanrahan and Bob, William J.
