RN PEPA 70 ABOLISH ARMY Socialst Premier Would Di- band llctifl’_s_l__rmed Forces Copenhagen, May 17.—Swept by a flame of anti-war sentiment, the diminutive kingdom of Denmark has just concluded a remarkable parliamentary election which may make the nation the first on earth to accept total disarmament. The Danish Socialist leader, M. Stauning, has been triumphantly retured to power on a platform which calls for the disbanding of the army and the navy and the substitution for these services . of and had served in the Folketing— the lower house of the Danish Parliament — since 1906, had & very marrow majority in . Parlia. ment. He brought in a bill pro- posing to abolish the army and navy entirely. The proposal took the country by surprise, but Stauning defended it vigorously. 1f the big powers in the League of Nations meant what they said in their various treaties, h® con- tended, then a small nation like Denmark - was amply protected and was simply wasting the money it spent on military pur- poses. On the other hand, if the big powers did not mean what they said. it was even more fool- ish for small nations to maintain military establishments; the ‘ex- periences of Belgium and Servia in the World War, he declared. proved that no little nation could | possibly defend itself against a big one. The lower house of Parliament passed his bill, but the upper | house — composed of more con- servative members of society— defeated it, and Stauning resigned the premiership, to he succeded by Madsen-Mygal, leader of the Liberal party. Madsen-Mygdal tried {a middle course. He refused to adopt the Socialist disarmament program, but he cut $3,500,000 off the army and navy budget, and to steer rceived in the recent election, Den- mark probably will face a conatitu- tional crisis of considerable magni- tude. At any rate, this first approach to real disarmament by any Euro- pean country will be well worth watching. “0LD IRONSIDES” S00N 10 SAIL OCEAN AGAIN Restoration of Frigate Half Com- pleted—Famoug Ship Will Tour for Benefit of School Children Boston, May 17. May 17.—The only lady in Washington who is driven around in a flivver by a liveried chauffeur is Mrs. Ava Long, the housekeeper of the White House. The flivver {5 new and shiny and. with the chauffeur in the driver's| seat, stands out almost like a purple and yellow fire truck. It is one of the White House cars, of course, and | {is used by Mis. Long when she goes | | to market or abroad on other duticy. Mrs. Long came to the White| House in March, succceding Mrs. | . Riley, who is now open to| s, after three years of service | under the Calvin Coolidges. The | new housekeeper is a pleasant, middle-aged widow who served for several years as both social secretary and Lousekeeper in the household of Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Rogers of New York. Recently Mra. Rogers went to Paris and Mrs. Long knew no French. At just about that time the Hoovers had placed an order with a New. York agency for a capable woman with experience in large enter- tainments. So Mrs. Long came to the White House. 3 Mrs. Longworth Surprises Mrs. Alice Longworth's refusal to show up at the recent dinner party thrown by the Eugene Meyers be- cause of the precedence accorded to Mys. Edward Everett Gann, sister and hostess of Vice President Curtis, was something of a revelation to those who know the famous Alice only by reputation. It had always been more or less understood that Alice stood aloof from the sillier phases of the local social racket and never bothered her little head about precedence and other social regulations pe- culiar to tHe capital. She was Te- garded as almost the only impor- tant dame in town who could turn up her nose at the whole racket and get away with it. The ac- cepted theory was that when she gave or went to parties it was solely with the idea of enjoying herself. Now, however, wife appears to have destroyed that illusion and is coming to be regarded rather as a social auto- crat. She may have made Mrs. Gann's social progress considera- bly more difficult, probably with- out damaging her own social pres. the speaker's tige, which is rather firmly planted. One On Bryan's Daughter Mrs. Ruth Bryan Owen, the good- looking congress-woman from Flor- ida, told one the other night at a Press Club session. During her campaign tour she came to a town where she was in- troduced by an old friend of her father, William Jennings Bryan. “Give the little girl a big hand.” said the chairman, *“I used to know her when she was young.” There was something-of a laugh at that and the chairman per- ceived that he hadn't quite said the right thing. “I mean, when paratively young,” rected himself. she was com- he hastily cor- Sinclair's Buddies !
