- SALING THROUGH ENTIRE CONTINENT Be Poibe in Sout Washington, May 14 (P—Sail through Seuth America! That is a dream of future travel relnforced by recent discoveries re- ported by two German explorers. The Germans bring news of a water link between the Amazon and La Plata river systems. The Casiquaire, a nature-made canal 225 miles long, was discovered in 1744 to connect the Orinoco riv- er with the Amazon. Some similar water link long has been sought in southern Brazil connecting the Ama- zon with the Paraguay or Panama. thus linking the Amazon and the La Plata territory. With proper development, the National Geographic Society be- lieves, the three major river sys- tems of South America could offer an itinerary like this: sail from New York to Port of Spain, Trini- dad; transfer to river steamer en- tering Orinoco delta and traversing river 780 miles to Atures, limit of deep water navigation: take launch above rapids through Casiquaire canal to the Negro: 1,000 miles down the Negro to Manaos: trace Madeira tributary of the Amazon, turning at Guajara Mirim into the Guapere: enter headwaters of the Paraguay and float into the Panama dewn to Buenos Aires. The voyage from the mouth of the Orinoco to Buenos Aires would cover an estimated distance of more than 6,000 miles. Com. De Pinedo Zacchetti, en- gineer, and Del Prete sailed over mest of this route on their remark- able scaplane flight through the center of Bouth America. They flew the first plane to go up the Para- guay river and down the Guapore and Madeira and Manaos. From Manaos they turned down the Ama- zen to Para instead of using the Casiquiare route, Their success suggests that sca- planes or amphibians will usc the flewing roads of South America } fore steamers. Specdy planes move a traveler into cooler air where insects are absent and can cut across the river bends that so lengthen a steamer's journey. Extension of the present Haiti atr service would bring planes on past the Lesser Antilles to the Orinoco meuth. The river route to Buenos Aires is the hypotenuse of a tri- angle whose outer point is Pernam- buco. Twenty-one days sailing time between New York and Buenos Aires could be cut to onc week or less, with all flights made by day- light. South America has not yet grown up to the advantages of its natural river transporation system. The Amazon alone has 3,000 miles of navigable water. Ocean steamers can go 2,500 miles up the Amazon to Jquitos, which is like steaming | on an ocean packet boat up the issippi and Ohio to Pittsburgh. ut few go to lquitos, because neither the Indian .mor the white man has yet harnessed the luxuriant |- vitality of the tropical forest to the needs of man. 1.0, 0.F.
