[ | NEW BRITAIN HERALD Ji » : : NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, TUESDAY, MAY 7, 1929, PRENIER FRED ON BUT IS UNNJURED Waldomares, Lithuanian Statss- - man, Escapes But Bystander Is Killed by Bullet POLES ARE INPLICATED Assailant and Reported Conspir- ators Make Clean Getaway Berlin, May 7 (M—A dispatch to ‘Telegraphen Union from Kovno, Lithuania, today said that three as- sallants of Premier Augustinas Wal- demaras were heard conversing in| the Polish language prior to their unsuccessful attempt last night to assassinate him. The garden in which the attempt took place was closed immediately by police, who found a quantity of hand grenades and munitiona there. All roads leading from Kovno were ordered closed and a strict guard was maintained on them. The premier's body guard was strengthened. One Killed, Two Wounded Kovno, Lithuania, May 7 —One person was dead and two were un- der treatment today for serious wounds as a consequence of an assassination attempt last night against Premjer Augustinas Walde- maras. Neither the premier nor his wife was injured. The assailant es- caped in the confusion. The attack was made as the party entered the garden of a theater where they were to attend a concert. Three bullets from the assailant's &un struck Lieutenant Gudinas, an aide of the premier, and he died in- staptly. Another bullet passed through the right lung of Captain Verbickas. another aide, while a fifth inflicted a serious abdominal wound on a grandnephew of the premier. Garbled Reports The London Press published dif-* ferent accounts of the attempted assassination. A dispatch to the Daily Mail from Riga said two ac- companying officers shielded the premier with their bodies when a hand grenade was thrown at his carrage, one of them paying with his dife for his heroism, and the oth- er being gravely injured. Although the assailant escaped certain political opponents of the prefnier were being questioned. fome quarters ascribed the attack to his recent .action in prohibiting May Day demonstrations in Litha. ania and ordering immediate disso- lution of the social democratic party and trade unions. An Exchange Telegraph dispatch from Riga ‘said a bomb was thrown at the premier's automobile, wound- ing his stepson and two other per- sons. A daughter of a Lithuanian professor who was passing at the time also was wounded. A Kovno dispatch to the Tage- blatt of Berlin said the premier's, personal aide was killed, and a Miss Joeinaite and the stepson of the pre- mier were seriously wounded. Seven tullets were fired and three persons were seen fleeing after the outrage, according to this accouat. Professor Waldemaras became premier and minister of foreign af- fairs of Lithuania on December 18, 1926, after a military revolt, the cir- ecumstances of which gave rise to charges that the army has dominat- ed the government ever aince. The deposed government was charged by the army chiefs with having con- nived with Lithuania communists at & Bolshevist uprising. Adopted Son May Die Y.ondon, May 7 M—An Exchange Telegraph dispatch from Riga says several arrests have been made among members of the social-dem- ocratic party which was recently outlawed in connection with yester- day's attempted amsassination of Premier Waldemaras of Lithuania. An eyewitness of the attack said two men fired at the premier and two others hurled hand grenades as his car drew up. Two unexploded grenades were found later near the theater which the Waldemaras party ‘was entering. Lieutenant Gudinas, who was Rilled, was the premier's personal friend and bodyguard and one of those who aided him to rise to pow- er. It was believed the premier’s '10- year-old adopted son would not sur- vive the wounds he received. Juvenile Actor Is Blinded by “Villain” Somerville, Mass.,, May 7 M—The enthusiasm of the juvenile lead of & local stock company in daring the villains’s brandished pistol may cost Robert Linden, 20, his sight. 1 Linden was playing the lead last *night against Jack Kingston, 30, the villain. In the last act Linden's part called for defiance in the face of a menacing weapon. The youth ad- vanced too closely, however. and when Kiagston fired a blank cart- ridge the flash and powder sprayed Linden's face. The curtain was rung down and Linden rushed to the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary at Boston, For Philippine Post Maj. Gen. Workers who returned to their jobs yesterday reopened the me- chanical and chemical departments and made ready the machinery in other departments for other work- men expected to take up their du- ties soon. How many of the 5,500 workers normally employed in the plants are ready to return to their jobs was one of the questions over which union and non-union leaders were at wide variance. Heads of the “Loyal Work- ers of Bemberg.” a non-union organ- ization, said 200 workers were in the plants yesterday and that 63 per cent of the strikers were ready to return to work. Union leaders de- nied the statement and staged a pa- rade in.a driving rain to make the denial emphatic. “A peaceful resistance” has been ' announced as the policy of the workers' union, but state, county and city officers were taking every precautionary measure to guard against disorders. Mounted guards patrolled the streets and prohibited loitering. Machine guns were placed on roefs of the plants and national guardsmen with fixed bayonets guarded all entrances to the prop. erty. Dr. Arthur Hothwurf, president of the Rayon companies. said all the workers he needed were available hut that several weeks would be re- quired to resume normal operations. Two arrests were made yesterday when the union forces sought to in- fluence workers from returning to the plants. Paris women are starting a fad for carrying venomless serpents as pets. BERLIN PREPARES T0 PREVENT RIOTS 8 Communists Killed in Nay Day Distarbances to Be Buried Tomorrow Rebellion Charges Berlin, May 7 (®—Police today planned measures designed to pre- vent a recurrence of violence when {21 communists killed in post-May Day riots at Neukoelln and Wedding are buried tomorrow in a single grave, 4 It was announced there would be |no interference with the funeral it- !selt or with a political demonstra- |tion at the cemetery following inter- {ment, but that the constabulary would crush promptly any demon- stration on the streets. General belief was that any strike which may take place at 2 p. m. Wednesday as a result of the com- munist headquarters call for a general walkout will be of small consequence. Nearly all of the workers who struck last week in | protest against police treatment of the communists in Neukoelln and Wedding have rcturned to jobs, Communist members in the Prus- sian diet introduced a motion of no confidence in Minister of the Interior Grzesinski. The motion demanded the dismissal of Chief of Police Zoergiebel, mediate withdrawal of forces from the contested areas, release of all communists now under arrest, and rescinding of the order prohibiting demonstrations in the streets. partictpation in the disturbances of last week 32 were to be arraigned today on charges of disturbing the peace and open rebeilion. The ex- amination of the remainder was continued. Bitter criticismm of the ruthless- ness of the police measures in sup- pressing the communists continued. After autopsies of eight of 23 of those killed bullets found in bodies were submitted to | determine whether the pol demonstrators fired them. The fact that only one policeman had a bullet wound in his hand, al though fourteen' .others received serious knife wounds and injuries from stones aroused serious doubts in many minds as to whether most |of the shots fired in the four day melee were not from the guns of the police, Of five women Kkilled all died of bullet wounds. Only one died on the street, the others being killed by |direct shots while in their own homes. o Danzig has reported a crisis be- tween communists and police there. A number of rioters were clubbed and others arrested, Harvard students refused to leave a cafeteria when fire broke out. Finally they decamped, taking along their food, and finished the meal on the sidewalk.
