Legislators view the increase in|g number of cabarets in various lights —as a menace to minors, as an at- traction for tourist dollars, as breed- ers of vice. While they scratch heads over the problem of ridding the town of those resorts that cause scandal, without interfering with the more luxurious places, joy-loving Cubans cheerfully feed indiscrimin- ate dollars into the night club grist. Most recent of munfcipal and fed- eral government attempts to classify cabarets and close certain types was Mayor Miguel Mariano Gomez's wholesale padlocking of so-called *“dancing academies” in the China- town district. His sccret service men toid him—what every casual tourist knows—that the cabarets with a 20 cent entrance fee, no cou- vert cherge, and unbounded dancing opportunities, are nightly crowded with minors. g He put the lid on tight, and since that date has been listening to the incessant wail of proprietors who protest discrimination against their cheap prices, while the more ornate clubs with regular hostesses and high prices, are allowed to operate unmolested. The answer to the problem, as one gupper club lawyer sees it, is to make public outcry or public scandal | | the only cause for padlock.
