FOOT GUARD BALL BRILLIANT AFFAIR Governor, l)anghw. ad J Coolidge Attend Function New Havea, Feb. 26 M—The color and brilllance of dress uni- forms of the military guests mingled with the gowns of their women guests made the annual ball of the Second Company Governor's Foot Guards held in the army last night the most colorful in many years. The drill hall was bedecked 1 ith white, gold and blue bunting amid rows of smilax twined with colored lights hung from the ceiling. Crys- tal chandeliers covered the large lights. Boxes were arranged along the walls of the hall with the governor's box in the center at one end. The ball was the first official appearapce of Major John Coolidge in this city and with him was his flancee, Miss' Florence Trumbull. Coolidge, who recently was made a member of the governor's staff, wore the new dreas uniform of blue, trimmed with gold braid. Miss Trumbull wore a gown of American beauty taffeta made with a long tight bodice and a skirt draped to one side. The ladies of the governor's party entered the hall escorted by mem- bers of the Second Company, Gov- ernor Trumbull and his staft follow- ed. The Foot Guard band and an orchestra furnished music for danc- ing. Y. W. C. A. NOTES Girl Rescrve Dept. Girl Reserves clubs will meet as usual this weck. Interclub council members will report to Mrs. Caufield on expected club attendance at the conference and operetta. All girls in- terested in efther are urged to at- tend their club meetings. The Girl Reserve conference for Connecticut and parts of New York will be held in this city on March 15, 16, 17. Vocational guidance will be stressed and experts have been abtained to help the girls in making plans for their future. The condition of three of the vic- tims was reported serious but phy- siclans belleved all might recover. The names on the danger list were those of Mildred Reed, 11, of Ar- lington, N. Mary E. Slack, 44, of Cambridge, Mass, and A. B. Wil- loughby of Holderness, N. H. The blind man, believed to have been Levi Hopkins, 60, of Provi- dence, apparently was unable to grope his way to safety when the bus was transformed into a raging furnace and was trampled by panic- stricken fellow passengers. Charred bones were found in the ruins of the bus, which was destroyed. Driver is Held Daniel Goss of Medford, Mass., driver of the bus and one of those injured, was held today pending an investigation by the state police. In- dications were that the fire started from a heater under a seat near the front of the crowded bus. Jacobs, b3. wife of a retired baker, was at the point of death loday after an uttempt of a negro assailant to burn her alive in the furnace of her home. Louis Glover, 35, alleged attack- er, arrested shortly after he left the Jacobs home late yesterday, waa spirited out of town by officers who feared mob violence. There was scattered talk- of violence, but no demonstrations. Mra. Jacobs was severely burned about the head and shoulders and nearly suffocated, but named Glover an her assallant before she col- lapsed. Physicians said there was little hope for her recovery.
