IGHT NEW CHURCH | BY SETBACK STYLE Receding Temces Admit Light 10 Manbattan Edifice New York, Feb. 14 — The “sky- raper” type of architecture, with skylines broken to conserve light, as been applied with unusual em- hasia to the recently completed | rish house of the Church of the Heavenly Rest and the Beloved Dis- iple here, the first unit in a $3,- 00,000 group. One of the severest tasks con- onting architccts in New York fs| e rationing of daylight in thickly uilt up sections. In the construc- on of this church group particular ttention was paid the “islands” of ht left between towering walls. ‘The church itself is rapidly ap- roachiug, cofhpletion. 1t stands n an uptown Fifth avenue corner, poking to the west over Central ark. ''The height of this edifice is o redt that exceputional precautions d to be taken lest it overshadow e parish house, constructed di- ly to the rear. This was ac- mplished by setbacks, thorough- ly in keeping with the Gothic arch- itecture, but also serving an ef-| loctlv- purpose. | 'he result is that the pll’llh] houn appears in a series of steps, breaking back from the church, its height ranging from one to six stories. This not only has provided the parish house ample light, but has left the great east window of the church free from shadow. Another “island” of light appears to the south of the church, where a low cloister has been {imposed between the towering walls of the church and a residence to the south. A carved stone doorway leads through this cloister to the tiny Chapel of the Beloved Disciple. Thus light is promised the south windows, Setback {deas of construction have been prevalent in office build- ings for years, but this is believed to be the first time it has ever been | applied to a church.
