FIRE BOARD HEAD LAUDS PHONE GIRL L in Galling O Platoon T. P. McAuliffe, manager of the Southern New _England *Telephone company of this city, has received a letter from Chairman James J, But- ler of the board of fire commission- cre thanking the company for its services during the few minutes fol- lowing the recent Hotel Erwin fire. A general alarm at that time brought so many hundreds of calls to fire headquarters that Manager McAuliffe set aside several spare op- erators to help the two fire depart- | ment operators. ! Mr. Butler's letter is as follows: “Mr. T. P. McAuliffe, “8, N. E, Tel. Co, “City. “Dear 8ir: “Telephone subscribers, 1 imagine, frequently feel indebted to the oper- ators for especial service given, but few take the time ' to record this sentiment. /) “The fire department and the board of fire commissioners had oc- casion Baturday night to call on your force to put through or re- ceive several hundred calls in a very short space of time, A general alarm was sent in for the Erwin hotel fire and“it was necessary for us to sum- mon the off platoon of more than 40 men and get them to the fire in time to have their services count for tomething. Our two operators re- ported to the board that the service given them was prompt, accurate and courteous, The fire was check- ed with but & fraction of the loss that might have occurred had we not had the fullest cooperation from | your staff, and we are frank to say that the saving of- the hotel and ad- Jacent buildings is attributable to| the telephone operators in a consid- erable measure, “Will you kindly express to the operators the appreciation the board of fire commissioners feel. “Respectfully, “JAMES J.
