SECLUDED MONKS SHOWN ON STANPS Yiews of Ancient Monasteries Revealed by Postage Monastic Christianity led many venerable friers and nuns to retire from the world, but they have not been able to hide themselves from the desiguers of postage stamps, who have selected monasteries and monks for numerous pictures to occupy en- \vclope corners and carry letters to their destinations. No less than four prominent clerics of the days when monastic orders were being formed and were at their height are shown on one series of four Italian stamps issued & few years ago to commem- orate an anniversary of the founding of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, This society was or- ganized to carry out the request of Jesus for his followers to fare into the world and spread the gospel. St. Domenico is one of these. He was a Spaniard who, in the 13th century, was commissioried to preach among the Albigensian Protestants of southern France. In 1215 he found the order of Dominicana, sometimes called the Preaching Framrs, for the spreading of the teachings of the Christian church, This order subse- quently became an educational one and produced many tamous scholars from its ranks. The Dominicans practice rigid self-descipline, holding midnight services, fasting for long periods, abstaining from meat en- and practicing complete - Found “Nails” On Hands On another stamp of the same set is portrayed the greatest of all the founders of orders, St. Francis of As- sisi. Born in 1182 in Italy, Krancis was in early life a soldier, but he soon disappeared from the circle of liis friends and gave himself to the 1epers and the hospitals, later found- ing the I'ranciscan order to carry on his work. On Mount Alverno one day 1rancis is said to have seen a \ision of a scraph on a cross, after which he found the “stigmata” on his hands. These are marks like those of nails and are supposed to have a relation with the crucifixion. The mental and stiritual turmoil through which I'rancis went on Mount Al- verno weakened him and he died two years later. Ttaly and San Ma- rino have 1ssucd special sets of stamps in honor of him. These show, aniong other scenes, the vision on the mountain and the suint's death. The Franciecans became an educational order and were ‘influcntial among the Indiuns in this country. There was another St. Francis in the 16th century. He was likewise an ltalian and was the son of nch purents. He bocame a bishop of Ge- neva atter magnificant evangelical work. He is the third houored by liawy of t “Propagation 6f the Fatn®” slamps. I'he fourth one is St. Teresa. who sived in the 161h century. She was a Spuniard, and, like so many other *units, suw strange visions. These led Lier to found an order of “Bare- 1oois.” ven the Fish Listencd One of the greatest evangelists of the Roman Catholic church was 8t Anthony of Pudua, who wus honored by Portugal with a series of stamps ST. He is said to have been such a fine speak- er that even these tiny denizcus of the decp listened in rapture to his words. What little education there was centered about training for re- lizious orders, and se these mong teries became the schools of the time.
