Second Section STAMLEY WORKS _ MARKS TS ROOF Has Labels Identifying New Britain for Aviators E. W. Pelton, general superintend- ent of the Stanley Works yesterday informed I'ostmaster Erwin that in response to his campaign for air- plane roof markers in this city, the Stanley Works without a word to the public had built a set of roof mar- kers on one of its factory buildings and had completed the job, even to a pair of flood lights, and that avia- tors flying over the city, at least from the western end of New Brit- ain, are enabled to see the name of the town and the direction in which they are flying. Charles Lindbergh is a technical adviser, Colonel lindbergh at that time pointed out that on his midwest tour he ob- served the need of roof markers for what they would contribute to the safety, reliability and speed of air- planes, Following his early communica- tion with the Guggenheim fund, Postmaster Erwin was notified by Postmaster General Harry 8 New that it was considerqd advisable for him to take the lead in New Britain in a campaign for roof marking. He ‘was advised that the U, 8. depart- ment of commerce also was ready to lend what service it could. Mr. Erwin asked Theodore 8. Hart, & local aviator, to' make a survey of available roofs, Mr. Hart reported such roofs as the New Britain Machine company, the big tank of the New Britain Gas com- pany and the rgof of the ice house on Doerr's pond, Later Lieutenant Carl Dixon notified Mr. Erwin that it was the consensus of opinion among aviators that the only plausible places for roof markers were rail- ‘way stations and gas tanks, Realizing the difficulties in paint- ing a sign on any roof large enough to carry letters 15 feet high, Mr. Edwin, with the aid of the depart. ment of commerce and the Guggen- helm fund, got into touch with a textile concern which makes a fabric letter simlilar to that which is glued onto streets for-traffic markers. He asked prices on these jobs and learned that while one firm wanted $350 a letter, which would mean a cost of more than $3,000; another firm offered a job just®ss satistactory for approximately $400 for the com- plete job. Yesterday the postmaster was sur- prised to be notified by Mr. Pelton that the Stanley Works had gone ahead quietly and at its own expense had marked the roof of building No. 10, putting the Stanley Works on an upper corner in smaljer letters, New Britain in the large 15 foot letters in the center of the roof and an arrow indicating directions on an- other corner.
