T0 SHARE ALIE Propossd Missouri Community Would Be Ideal Place Independence, Mo, Nov. 3 (P—A self-sustaining co-operative . com- munity, built on Christian’ ideals wherein all members would share ! rewards and responsibilities alike, is the vision of Dr. Frederick M. Smith, president of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Sainta. i The gathering to Zion of the members of the church, 102,000 of them scattered over the world, has been called by President Smith, Who, the ybelieve, is their leader by divine revelation. Zion is Indepen- dence and its environs, headuarters of the church since 1906. Already about 5,000 members of the church live in and about Inde- pendence, where the church owns some 3,000 acres of land. An ag- ricultural colony on the steward- ship plan already is functioning near Independence, and 11,000 acres of land vecently was purchased in Taney county, in the Ozark Moun- tain region of Missouri, for another colony. Quietly the church s buying land in this vicinity, looking to the day when there will be enough to found a great community with its own industries, its own sources of | raw materials, and with the people | taking only what they need for themselves and turning the surplus into the common treasury for the common good. Individuals have been coming lo‘ Independence for several years to settle at the “center place” of the! church, They buy land on easy| terms from the church, Under the ‘plan children of the community and colonies would be, educated along the lines for which ) they had shown themselves best adapted, in order that they might | take their proper place in thel acheme, | Outlying colonies, such as is to be established on the land in Taney county, would supply the industries of the central community with raw materials and the people with food. On the Taney county land it is planned to begin at once the raising of sheep and cattle to provide food, ‘wool and leather, Already nego- tiations have been made for mem- =222 YOUR NEW CLOTHES ON MY WEEKLY PAYMENT PLAN been many since their church was organised 98 years ago by Joseph ette, N, Y., in 1830 with a few mem- bers.
