HIGHEST BRIDGE "IN WHOLE WORLD Being Built Across Canyon in Arizona Phoenix, Ariz, Nov. 2 P—Replac- ing the ancient ferry that has served northern Arizona and southern Utah dwellers since white men first began | te travel the uncharted area of the Painted Pesert, the Lee's Ferry bridge, highest structure of its kind in the world, is to be formally put into use with elaborate dedication ceremonies next June. The bridge will open up a great expanse of country and eventually result in a direct mountain states automobile route from Canada to Mexico. Located at the upper reaches of the Grand Canyon in the wild, un-| settled portion of northern Arizona, the bridge will provide for the first | time a handy route of tranportation | between Arizona and Utah. It will be the only bridge crossing the Col- orado river in Arizona north of To- pac, near Needles, Cal, and will pro- vide an easy way for tourists to reach | Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, | and Rainbow Natural Bridge, in southern Utah; the north rim of the | Grand Canyon and the great virgin | forests in northern Arizona, and for | travelers through southern Utah to |, visit the Painted Desert, south rims | of the Grand Canyon, petritied for- | ests and other natural wonders in | Arizona. | It s expected to open up trade | and traffic between Utah and Ari- zona, neighboring states that h“wi been separated by the great cleft | known as one of the seven wonders | of the world. It will be a means | toward developing commerce and of opening a vast land that is known to hardly anybody except the Hopi | Indians, who roam the desert. | The ~three-hinged, steel arch bridge, considered by engineers to be more rigid than the suspension type, is 467 feet above the stream bed, and its end rests in precipitous cliffs which border the sluggish Col- | orado river. The span itself is 615 fest long, with the bridge over all being 800 feet long. So far as can be determined, it is the highest au- tomebile bridge in the world. Because of the height, engineers encountered ditficulty in devising a ‘way to construct the bridge, as there was mo way of bullding false sup- | ports from the bottom of the can- yon. The cantilever plan was em- ployed and the supports were con- structed In the granite walls. As the bridge was bullt out from the wall | first on one side, then on the other | side of the river, toggle jaints were used to extend the huge steel beams | until the two sections met in the cen- ter and were joined. It was the first time, 8o far as en- | gineers connected with the Arizona | state highway department could as- oertain, that a bridge was construct- | ed in that manner. Material had to be trucked 135 mijes over a seldom traveled desert | road to the site. Some of the steel sections used in the construction were 56 feet long and weighed 14 tons. These had to be hauled by truck and traller. Planse are being made for a ded. | feation celebration in which the governors and other officials of Ari- | sona, California. Utah, Nevada, Colo- | rado and New Mexico are expected | te join. The Arizona Highway department | plans to make an apprapriation next year for the construction of a new road from Flagstaff to the bridge and on to the Utah line, to provide ' & good means of transportation be- ' plete an important link in route 89, Canada-to-Mexico highway. The bridge is 135 miles from and almost directly north of Flagstatf, Ariz. The Painted Desert lies be- tween it and outside posts of civi- lization. ANCIENT TEWPLE IN LD KENTUCKY Discovery Datets Back to Pre- historic Times i | Lexington, Ky., Nov. 2 (P—Dis- covery of new evidence of a tribe g pre-historic Indians in Christiay county of western Kentucky is re. ported by Prof. W. D. Funkhouset and Prof. W. S. Webb of the Uni- | versity of Kentucky, who have been | excavating an ancient ceremonial | mound. The objects disclosed by | the search are among the most an- | cient ever found in Kentucky, uni-| versity archeologists declare. B The Christian county mound was 10 feet high and had a radius of about 75 feet. A crew of laborers | {removed 1,600 cubic yards of din before the scientific investigators | relieved the workmen for the final |/ excavating. ] The base of the mound, it wa | found, had been used as a ceremo- nial site with ancient altars, skele- | tons, pottery and other signs of re-historic life in evidence. Foun- dations of the structures of wor- ship indicated that the houses were built by sinking rows of posts for | the walls, with posts in the center, to support the roof made of inter- ' woven brush and twigs. Three such structures had been built on the location. One would be built, then burned and covered with sod and a new one erected. ARTIFICAL FEVER WADE BY RADIC Patient Has No Other Symptoms 0f Illness Albany, N. Y., Nov. 2. (A—Arti- ficial fever, sed by radio, without any accompanying illness, is under study here. The phenomenon was discovered | when a bystander near a short | wave radio antenna noted a 2.2 de- | gree rise g his mouth temperature in 15 minutes. The radio was dis- charging from a six foot red to ground with sixty million altena- tions pér second of 15,000 volts. Helen R. Hosmer of the depart- ment of physiology of Albany Med- ical college reports in Science on the fever experiments, saying: “Here is a method for producing at will any degree of fever without introduction of bacteria, toxins, for- eign proteins or material or conditicn into the ani- | mal body. “The increase of temperature is | produced directly within the ani- mal structure, as in ordinary fever. It occurs promptly while the ani- mal is In a normal condition in other respects. Its uncomplicated cffects are thus thrown open to di- rect study. We may hope very soon to solve the long-vexed ques- tion of whether fever is a func tional response or merely a condi tion secondary to infection or trau ma.” The silence in the Rorky moun tains is so great that the flapping of partridge wings may be heard for other adventitious | SPECIAL Bed Comforters $3.50 Filled with all new cot- ton and covered with ma- terial in floral patterns with solid color borders, all colors, spectally priced.
