On the basis of the record, the t consolation of the republicans lies in the regularity with which the state has persisted in voting the re- publican ticket nationally. Cleveland ould not break that regularity, and although Willon did get the elec- toral vote in the three-way split of 1912, it was by a minority vote. Four years ago, Massachusetts gave Cool- idge, her favorite son, two and a half times as 1any votes as she gave his democrat opponent. The vote then was 705 .9 for Coolidge, 280, 554 for Davis, and 141,225 for La Follette, There is a particular reason why the republican resistance in this state is far more than a matter of |* form. The republican organization is vastly proud of its traditions, and of the old New gland stock which went into their making. It is proud of the protective tariff. It is proud of the fact that a Massachusetts man now sits In the White House. It does not even like to think of the possibility that political domination might pass over to the leaders of the democratic party, and the state of Hoar and Crane and Lodge cast its vote for a democrat to succeed Calvin Coolidge. Much has been made of these things in the republican campaign. In particular, much has been made of the tariff and “Coolidge proaper- ity,” Mr. Hoover himself made these topics the theme of his address when he visited Boston, Gov. Smith, speaking here later, chaf- |lenged the validity of this argu- {ment, and the democratic speakers generally have been telling the vot- ers that the recent situation in the Massachusetts textile industry does not support a claim of prosperity. The republicans are keeping to the issue, however, declaring that what- ever depression the industry may have suffered is nothing compared to what would happen to it under the democrats, Among the textile workers, in par- icular, the republican prosperity | 4 New Haven — Berkeley Divinity school, founded at Middletown, in 1854 is formally transferred to this city with dedication of new home here.
