SAED NP, RASPS CONTRES Passenger Gunses Fatal Crash at " Mlantic ity Atlantic City, N. R, Oct. 19 P—A frightened passenger who gripped the controls of an akplane in which he and sevem other prominent bank- ers were making a sightseeing trip over Atlantic City was believed re- sponsible today far the crash of the plane and the deuth of one of the bankers and the serious injury of the others of the purty. W. Octave Chanwte, Denver in- vestment banker, died in the Atlan- tic City hospital two: hours after the accident. Mr. Chanuwfe and four of | the other passengers Wwere delegates | to the annual conventjon of the In-| vestment Bankers Asspciation here. ‘The injured are: Pliny Jewel, vice president of Coftin and Burr, Inc., Boston, and former president of the association; fractured skull; conditidn critical. Thomas Dysart, president Knight, Dysart and Gamble, St. Louls, also a | former president of the association, broken ribs, internal injuries and broken left wrist; condition critical. Henry L. Duer, of W. W. Lanahan and Company, Boston, shock and Ito the hospital clation, cut and Ralph Somers of Absecoa, internal injuries and sheck. George. King, of Gardea City, L. 1., pilot, possible fracture of the right leg and ahoek. , Ferdinand Eble of Pl N. J., relief pilot; possil of right leg and shock. The plane, a sister ship of the transatlantic- Junkers plane Bremen, was returning to the field after a flight over the city. Watchers on the ground saw it go into a tail spin when approximately 3,000 feet in the air, right itself, go into another spin and crash to the ground. The chayge that someone had “frozen” to the controls, making it impossible for him to straighten the plane out when it went into the spin was made by King, the pilot. While being carried unconscious he cried out, “Get and ntville, fracture away from those controls, " |1ater after regaining consciousness told Walter Allen, manager of the | Crescent Air Serwice, that someone had climbed into the other cockpit, “jammed the foot control and frose the rudder.” Attendants at the hospital said that Mr. Jewel in his delirium also murmured, *Oh, leave go of,those controls.” When the plane took off all the passengers were in the cabin, wit- nesses said, but after the crash one of them was taken from the second cockpit. His identity was not estab- ‘The plane fell into telephone and telegraph lines before burying its nose in the marsh near the Florida avenue turnpike and that and the soft condition of the ground are be- lieved to have saved the lives of the other passengers. The spot where it fell is almost inaccessible. A freight engine and coal car of the Pennsylvania rail- road was commandeered to bring the injured to a street where they could be put into ambulances. Policemen and other rescuers had to wade in water to their waists to reach the wreckage of the plane. Mrs. Chapute was among those at the air field who saw tbe plane fall. She and her 16-year-old daughter, Elaine, had accompanied Mr. Cha- nute here to the meeting. Mr. Chanute and Mr. Dysart were both close friends of Charles A. Lindbergh. Mr. Dysart was one of the backers of the Lone Eagle's transatlantic flight. Mr. Chanute was a grandson of the late W. Octave Chanute, the first, of Chicago who was known as “the father of aviation.” Chanute Field at Rantoul, Il is named after the elder Chanute. Sommers, who is a World war flier and possessor of the Croix De Guerre, won for bringing down a German plane, happened to be at the fleld and was taken along be- cause there was one more place in the plane. -King, who has an excellent repu- tation as a commercial pilot, had flown the plane here from Curtiss of Col. Lindbergh's backers and .a party of eight friends to the con- vention. Among them was B. F. Mahoney of 8an Diege, Cal., builder of the Spirit of 8t. Leuls. Mr. Mahoney, whe witnessed the accident, said that from the ground it appeared as though no effort was made to right the plane when it went into the spin and that King's explanation that someone had “froz- en” to the controls seemed entirely plausible. It is common knowledge among fliers that when people become frightened in the air they frequently “freese” to whatever support is nearest to their hand. Pilots train- ing student-fliers are said to carry heavy wrenches or a club along with them which to knock uncon- scious the student if he becomes frightened in control of the plane and “freezes” to the rudder, making it impoassible for the pilot to handle the plane. o “DIRECT BY MAIL" ADS FOR NEW DIVORCE MILL Lawyers in Moasco Endeavoring to ‘Work up Thriving Business . in This Line Monace, Oct. 19 UP—A “direct by mail” campaign has been started in an effort to locate prospective di- vorces in the Riviera - lawyers scramble for business.
