OIL BURNER FOR AIRPLANES NADE Detreit, Sept. 20 M—The Packard Metor Company has announced the succeasful testing of an oil burning atrplame motor, the first of its kind over ped. The - demonstration was made Bete' yesterday beiore a-group of aeronautical engineers in a regula- tion Btinson-Detroiter = monoplane. plloted by Walter Lees and Capt. L. M. Weolson, the latter designer of the engine. . The metor, . which company offi- elals claim marks a revelutionary step in the development of ajrplane pewer, a radial air cooled type and develops 200 horsepower. ., It in- velves use of the Diesel prineiple of oil for fuel and eliminaics gaso- | like, ignition systems, Carburetors, | spark plugs and o‘her parts usually regarded as trouble makera. The engine derives power by fir- ing from comprassion in the cylin- ders, ‘the Diesel action that hereto- fore has been applied only in ex- tremely heavy engines for power plants and boats. Aside from ihe simplicity and ruggedness of design, the engine has fewer parts thar the lightest gasoline: engines: now in use, The three cardinal improvements over the gasoline motor, claimed by its designers, are: Elimination of the'danger of fire from gasoline. Reduction of' fyel .consumption and cest. It is clajmed the motor will carry a plane 25 per cent far- ther with the. game weight in oil fuel as compared with gasoline. Making possible’ of radie com- munication with aircraft on a broad scale, due to elimination’of inter- ference by electrical ignition sys- tems and gasoline engines. From the engineering standpoint, the most brilliant achievement is | elaimed in the weight reduction of such a Diesel engine. Until now the lightest Diesel plant’ever built weighed 100 pounds per horsepower. The new plant weighs less than thres pounds per horsepower. German engineers, whe have struggling for years in an effort to reduce the weight of Digsel plants, were quoted in recent newspaper dispatches as having given up the task as as efforts to make the engine applicable for airplanes were concerned. Plans for mass production of the engine are being held in abeyance by the Packard Company, pending further ground and air tests, offi- cials said. | W.C.T. U.
