Knapp accepts the ad- vice of her physiclan, Dr. A. R. Davignon, of this city, and the im- pression was given at the county penitentiary here last night that she would, New York's first woman sec- retary of state will serve the re- mainder of a 30-day gentence on a charge of grand larceny for the theft of census funds. Mrs. Knapp was moved from the sheriff's home to the hospital room at the penitentiary today and occu- pied a room not long ago occupied by Jean Cameron, flapper bandit. Decision was expected tomorrow on whether the prisoner would ask & new trial. John J. Conway, one of her attorneys, sald after a con- ference with: Mrs. Knapp that the decision was up to her. FIVE KULED N THRE CRASHES Sister Ship of Rocklord Fliers Cracks Up Rocktord, TIL., Sept. T M — The sister ship of Bert Hassell's mono- plane, the Greater Rockford, today was submerged in the Rock river. A World war aviator was killed and four Rockford men were seriously injured when its motor failed at a height of 200 feet and toppled over a wire into the river yesterday. M. E. Headley, the pilot, who served overseas with the 28th pur- suit squadron, was instantly killed. The injured, all passengers, were: Rickard 1Ives, fractured skull, broken leg and internal injuries; Horace H. Tuck, broken ribs; Dean Pringey, broken jaw; Paul Charn, bruise .. The plane was owned by the Packard Electric company of War- ren, O., and had only two stops re- maining before a 10,000 mile re- liability tour of 35 cities would have been completed. Forced Cleveland, Sept. 7 —A crumpled wing forced a Laird biplane 600 feet to the ground at the municipal airport yesterday and instantly killed George Stowell of Detroit, the pilot, and Gil Merryman, also of Detroit, a passenger. Stowell had borrowed the plane from E. J. Merryman of Cleveland for a practice flight. Merryman, his passenger, was manager of the Stout Air Bervice company's Cleve- land office, and Stowell was a pilot for the company. Democrats Change Name " Of Their Campaign Club By unanimous vote the members of the Alfred E. 8mith for President club who met last night at demo- cratic headquarters it was decided to change the name to the Smith-Rob- inson club, including the name of the vice presidential nominee. The club was formed before 8mith had been nominated and before Rob. inson had become a candidate for oftice. Martin J. Kelly proposed the change in name and his suggestion was adopted without discussion. Attorney Thomas F. McDonough reported that he has placed an order for a street banner on which the names of all candidates and the pic- placed. The club voted to accept a block of 60 tickets for the fifth district barbecue at Lake Compounce Sep- tember 20, and M. J. Kelly will be in charge of the distribution. It is expected that Governor Ritchie of Maryland will be the speaker. SWISS IMPORTING HONEY Berne, Sept. 7 (A—Switzerland, which during the first half of 1928 bought from the United States more than 86,000 of the 400,000 pounds of honey imported, is expected to be in the market shortly for increased quantities of high quality honey for hotel use. Low grade honeys are imported for the chocolate and candy industry. Swiss apiculturists have had the worst year since 1910. Balboa, Canal Zone, Sept. 7 (P— Lyle Womack hopes to obtain an in- terlocutory decree of divorce in De- cember from Ruth Elder, who “chose a career rather than be a housewife."” Her failure to kiss him when she returned to New York after almost flying across the Atlantic is cited in his petition. for divorce as a cause of much embarrassment. He charges that at that time she said to him in an undertone: “Don't be a fool.” Cruelty is charged in the petition and Womack understands his suit will not be contested. Although an interlocutory decree may be ob- tained in December under the laws a full divorce cannot be granted be- fore next June.
