HERALD TUESDAY, JUNE 26, 1928. cdncsd%omin [wwise | NEW BRITAIN NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, Steer Smith Campaign Ship ale Smhng Trolleymen’s Union Officials Declare Against State Strike |arbitrate all disputes which cannot Urge Employes of Hart- be adjustea with the ofticials of the | company in conference with the of- ford Division to Vote ficers of the locul division, vote ‘mo.! TORE CLOSES AT NOON STORE CLOSES AT NOON S ith great oney o ) “To vote ‘yes' means that you will “No” When Second Bal- lot Is Taken. Hartford, Jace 26 (P—Employes of the Hurtfor2 division of the Con- necticut company were urged by of- ficers of the local Trol'symen’s union iest night to vota czainst a strike in the new balloting ou the question which is to take piuce among all trolleymen of the state on Wednes- aay. The announczment of this change of position with respect of enforcing demands for thoster hours, more wages and a voice n mscipline came at a meeting held In Central Labor Union hall. Speak- ers stated that they had been forced to discourage a strike because & preliminary survey of the attitude of individual workers had disclosed that the number willing to obey a strike order was insufficient to make the walkout effective. Tt was pointed out that the only result of a strike would be the loss of jobs to the few hundred who obeyed the officer. But officials of the union, who in this way repudiated the original vote in favor of the strike, were careful to point out that their advice against striking was in no way to be construed as a concession in favor of the company’s position. Expres- sions of regret at the inability to make the strike effective prevailed among a majority of those present at the meeting, But it was at the same time conceded that a strike during the present period of indus- trial depression and with a number of the employes actually un- willing to support the move or at least unenthusiastic, would be disas- trous. New Haven, June (P —The sec- ond strike ballot of trolleymen in the employ of the Connectcut com- pany is to be taken tomorrow. Many union men who voted “yes” in re- ply to the questions on the first bal- lot which was given to them two weeks ago, afterward declared that they did not know they were voting to strike. The ballot which they will be given tomorrow explains clearly that a *“yes” vote means that the voters I& in favor of a walkout while a “no” vote will show the voter to be opposed to a strike | The official ballot reads as fol- oy | “Divisions 163 o Street Railway ployees’ Association of Amierica June 1928 3 —The company has oftered to | renew the present agreement for | another year with a few minor im- provements in working conditions, in he train service and miscellaneous departments, | *“The company has also agreed to arbitrate the question of wages.
