CANDIDATE BENG THOUGHT OF NOW. Republicans Want Man for Second Place on Ticket Kansas City, June 8 UP—The need of a running mate for presi- dential nominees was brought out here today in maneuvers prelimi- nary to the republican national con- vention formal opening of a head- quarters for Representative John Q. Tilson of Connecticut. Mr. Tilson, republican floor leader in the house, | is the first vice presidential candi- date to he represented by an office staff. John Jay Hopkins of New York is in charg The younger generation has en- tered a bid for representation in major convention activities. Among the arrivals are Osro Cobb, 23, mempber of the Arkansas legislature from Montgomery county, youngest delegate, and Miss Gladys Terhune of Twin Falls, Idaho, youngest na- tional committeewoman, Miss Ter. hune, a business woman, is 31 years old. Those convention badges threaten to be as confusing as naval insignie. in an inland town. Most everyone connected with convention activitie has a badge bearing glistening em- blems, but only delegates, alternates and a few others may view door- keepers with contempt. Hundreds of badges issued to entertainment com- mittees bore the note: ‘Not good for admittance to convention hall.” Madame Ernestine Schuman- Heink, who appeared here last spring in a farewell concert in cele- | bration of a half century on the stage, has returned and will sing at the convention. She returned pri- marily to assist a group of young singers. The National Woman's Party has announced appointment of a com- mittee to present a demand for a| plank in the republican platform specifying “men and women shall hgve equal rights throughout the United States and every place sub- | Ject to its jurisdiction.” Mrs. Jane | Norman Smith, chairman of the na- | tional council of the woman's party, Neads the delegation. | Road Conditions in | State of Connecticut; Road conditions and detours in the State of Connecticut made necessary by highway construction, repairs and oiling announced by the | State Highway Department as of | Jupe 6th are as follo Route No, 1.
