Amber, “Prussian zold," was trad- ed at this little spot on the Baltic coast with the ancient Phoenicians. Fishermen dredged for it in & days, but more recently it has be dug out of blue clay. Great hoppers bring up cars of clay from an area a syuare mile in extent. The clay 1= washed for amber in much the same way as auriferous earth is washed for gold. Each sca- son about 3,600,000 cubic meters of sofl are moved. Amber is found in pieces are picked out and with sand in great revolving drums. An army of girls sits at a running tard and picks out six recognized standard gualities. Every year the abeut 125,000 pounds third of this is suitabls orpaments. The rest is ground to powder to make *“pressed” amber, or melted down to make varnish and colophony. Amber oil and acid are by-products obtained by distillation.
