Rescued 80 Aboard Battleshipa, Havana, April 6.—(M—Fire reged in the Standard Ol Company's $18,- 000,000 refinery at Regla, across the harbor from Havana, today. Four explosions occurred within an hour after the fire was discovered }at 10 o'clock last night'and frequent blasts occurred after midnight, al- though none was of sufficient force to cause added damage. Inhabitants were driven out of the suburbs as the flames spread over a wide area surrounding the homes of the oil company officials. The officlals held little hope that much would be saved in the storage area of the re- finery, although a large force of fire fighters was on hand. Two hundred men from the United States battleship Wyoming were sent to Regla to aid in fighting the blage. Twelve of these were later brought established there suffering from minor burns and exhaustion. The en- tire Havana fire department also went to the refinery. ‘The people fled from their homes and were taken aboard the Wyoming and the Cuban battleship Cuba. A few of the women of the American colony remained at the scene to help the refugecs so long that it was fear- ed that their lives were in danger. | They managed to escape, however in | the launches of the Wyoming which | ferried the refugees across the har- | bor. i The flames disrupted telephone | service into the stricken district and | at times the lights went out for long periods. The naval vessels played their search lights on the scene to guide the refugees through the dense clouds of smoke.
