EEEA Y- IM-m \ NEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1928, el [ 1] AN RNy Months after the death of Capt. Hawthorne C. Gray (left) in the balloon in which he strove for a new world altitude record, the inspected instruments he carried have revealed the drama of his fatal effort. He equalled, the barograph shows, the 42,170-foot matk of an earlier ascent, though his descent by parachute invalidated the first and his desth the second, for purposes of recognition as a world recoed. The chart shows his three Lalloon flights, and indicates how far two of them surpasscd existing alrplanc and batloon altitude Washington, Feb. 3. —UP—Al- though he sought only knowledre, the glory of achlevement comes to Capt. Hawthorne months after his death n an army balloon alone six miles up in the air. The instruments he took with him on his last ascent on November ¢, together with his uncompleted log, found with his hody in the basket of his balloon. near Sparta, Tenn., tell the dramatic story of his trip to “the highest point up.” They show. "iow .carefully and #successfully -he planned the purely scientific phas>s. of his effort to gain knowledge of atmospheric con- ditions at extremely high altitudes. They shew also how carefully he planned to survive so that his own experiences under those condi- tions might be known. But there the personal element erept into his calculations. It didn’t occur to him to take the same pre- cautions with his clock that he took with his less personal record- ing instruments. That, air corps experts are convinced, i8 the rea- son he staved up tan Jong and afte: reaching for a second time the un- precedented altitude of 42,270 feet suffocated on the way down, some- where between the 39,000 and 29,- 000-foot levels, He was dectermined thermograph and at Jeast one of his two scaled barographs should give an accurate record of temper- ature and altitude during every that his minute of the flight. scnt to a jeweler greas- 8o they were Lim how his ascent was progress- ing and give him an {dea from time to time how much longer he could count on his oxygen supply, was net cleaned of ofl, and it stop- ped at an altitude of 80,000 feet, where the temperature was 35 de- grees below zero, C. Gray three | and all ofl and | was removed from them. | But the clock, which was to show ! One of the barographs failed, but of standards, discloses that Cap- tain Gray duplicated on that flight his unofficial altitude record of ¢2,- 470 feet, established May ¢, 1927, | when he rose 3,996 feet higher than | the world's altitude vecord for air- planes, held by Lieut. Carleton C. Champlon of the navy, and 7,034 feet above the ofticial free balloon record, The experiences of that ascent, when he had 13 descend in a para- chute from a height of 9,000 feet, guided Capt. Gray in his prepara- tions for the November attempt. Extraordinary precautions were taken to assure an uninterrupted oxygen supply, and tests made with animals jndicated that with an ade. quate supply of oxygen conscious- ness could b2 retained at altitudes up to 47,000 feet. Breathing rare- fied air, the animals became un- conscious under conditions encoun- tered at allnude- between 25,000 and 26,000 fec The pccullur effects of low air preasure “or, in other words, high altitudes, upon the human body also were consldered in the prepay rations which were made so aa to minimize the exertion required for every necessary act which Capt. Gray might have to perform. The ascent began at 2:33 p, m. and muaximum altitude was attain- ed at 4:20 p. m. That was much slower than the ascent in May, and his deacent was llkewise more | grudual, Air corps cxperts who have been studying Captain Gray's records as- sume that he ascended more rlow- ly in November K with the hope of gaining more accurate knowledge of conditions as his altitude in- creased, but they are certain that it he had known definitely how long he had been up after his clock stopped at 3:17 p. m. he would Lave managed to get down alive, the other, examined by the bureau !
