NELL'S LATEST PLA I ENUSUL Im te ‘Tagmics Baly’ Brough Int ‘Sirun Intrtnde New York, Jan. 31 (UP)—Rest- loms Breadway, baving mt com- paratively atill for five hours for the firet time in history, recelved with a degres of uncertainty today Fugene O'Neill's new nine-act drama, “Strange Interlude.” Never before had a play of that length been attempted in New York and nmever before had first nighters shown up for a play at 5§ o'clock in the sfternoon. But they did for the opening of the O'Neill perfor- mance and if the judgment of the critics is of any value, they will continue to patronize this longest of all American dramas. Is Very Intricate Although the critics praised it as | a startling but impressive novelty | which will at least wear throughout the season, there wers many who belioved the play was too intricate and too long to be digested and catalogued in less than a week. The audience which w: reoeive ‘Strange Interlude” appeared | in varlous garb, some dressing for | midnight et 6§ p. m, and others wearing tweeds and taking their| chenoes on getting home through | the after-theater crowds unnoticed. | A few were sald to have retired to hotels and changed into evening| clothes during the dinner intermis- sion after the fifth act. “Ewgenics Baby” “Strange Interlude” was a strange | play in more ways than one. It was & straage plot, involving the newly designated “‘eugenics baby” and ex-| tending over a period of 20 years. | Alse it was a strange portrayal, the | charactars speaking not alone the | linas that developed the plot but in| long ssides that revealed what they | were thinking aa well, | Crities agreed that the experi- ment in sollioquics was more suc- cessful than they had expected. The play deals with the life of | Nina Leeds (Lynn Fontanne) - and her relations with six men, includ- ing her father and five husbands and lovers. Nina is a psychopathic | ocase befors the first curtain, hav- ing lost her flance in an alrplane accident. The asides Ly which she reveals her true attitude toward the amen who figure in her lite are oc- oasionally of a calibre that would shock & Boston policeman. Views_of Critice Perey Hammond, reviewing the premier today in the Herald Tri- bune, predicts that the Theater Guild experiment will prove suc- cessful, *“I am disposed to promise pro- spective audiences that although they may grow a bit tired befors | Mr. O'Neill has finished his peer- ing inte the corners, they will re- main more or less rooted to their| nats.” Johs Anderson in the Evening Journal sald the play was pro- toundly engrossing but mccused the | report Walter Winchell of the Graphic connected the play with the case of the New York woman who gave birth recently to a baby as an ex- periment in eugenica Nina Leeds, in the play, finds it necessary at ome time in her life to have a child by & maa other than her own hus- band, who has @& straln of insanity in his family. E. W. Osborn, critic of the Eve- ning World, said, “Mr. O'Neill has given this outcast form (referring to the asides) a pew life, new uses and & new appeal to the sense of his audiences." Excerpts from other criticlsms follow: J. Brooks Atkinson, the Tims “‘Strange Interlude’ commands respectful interest of the enthusias- itie playgoer to whom experiment is never dull. This one can earnestly without belleving that ‘Strange Interlude’ is distinguished as a play ., . or that the experi- ment s a permanent addition to {the theater.” Dudley Nichols, Morning World: {“It needs all the restraint & reporter |can muster not to stamp the occa- 'sion without a second thought the most important event In the pres. ent era of the American theater. Leonard Hall, Telegram: ** ‘Stran, Interlude’ is one of the most tonishing adventures a stage ever had.” MEEHAN-SCHREY WEDDING IN NEW YORK ON JAN. 8 John F. Meehan, Wallace Street, Takes Margaret L.
