GRAHAM-PAIGE NEW TRANSHISSION Four Gears Work Out Very Well. { on Popular Automobile 1 | One of the important features adopted by the three Graham broth- | ors in the line of new Graham-Faige | motor cars, is the four-speed trans- mission on three of the six-cylinder models, as well as on the eight. This is the four-speed transmis- sion with which the Graham-Paige | organization has had such an ex-; tensive experience, and such excel-; lent results. Speed positions are lo-, cated identically the same as on alll standard gear shifts, with first speed latched out for emergency use. By making possible a slower en- | ine speed while the motor car is | traveling at a rapid rate, this trans- mission has pronounced advantiges| over the ordinary three-gear tvpe. Chief of these are driving smooth- noss with less vibration, and econ- | omy through liss gas and ofl con- | sumption. | Uses of the four different speeds are explained as follows: First speed | is intended for use in making a start | on hillsides, & climb out of tough places, or a start in deep sand or | mud. A start on pavements may al. | ways be made in second speed. This | gear is also used for climbing steep grades, or for driving in rough roads. Third is Intended for a quick staway. top speed on hills or going down mountains, and fourth for, rormal driving and high speeds in silence, | Although adaptable for a greater wumber of varied driving conditions, | 5 per cent of all driving is still done in high speed with the new trans- inission. When changes to third gear are made, for fast acceleration wor for hill climbing at top speed, they are accomplished with case at speeds as high as 50 miles an hour.
