MISS RUTH LATHAM Miss Latham, who is a student at Sea Pines school, Cape Cod, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Latham of Maple Hill. Social Activities About ‘Gown Burns Club to Honor Memory of Robert Burns— Woman’s Club and Their Activities—Impromptu Parties Keep Society Busy—Southland Lures New Britainites. Social activities were distinguished this week by an unusual number of small affairs. So numerous have they been that the past week has been almost as busy as its predecessors of the season. Every day there were gatherings for one or two tables of bridge, often preceded by luncheon, but more frequently fol- lowed by afternoon tea. The matinee was also a magnet, drawing a large group of younger and older people, many of whom made it really a party, giving luncheons beforehand, either at home or at one of the popular clubs or inns Which are proving .each day more invit‘ing. L Activities among the variohs Woman's clubs of the city hold the center of the stage at this season of the year. special note and wide interest is the announcement that Mrs. Clarence F. Bennett will address the next meeting of the Maple Hill Woman’s club. Her subject will be “Current .Events,” treating upon, among other topics the “Pan-American Con- ference.” Mrs. Arthur P. White who opens her residence on Golf street for this meeting will be aided by Mrs. A. S. Grant and Mrs. L. B. Nabford in ex:ter.tair:inz her guests. Of equal importance is the next session of the New Britain Woman’s club, occurring on Tuesday, January 24 at 3 o'clock in the chapel of the First Congregational church. :Featuring B. R. Baumgardt of New York City, the meeting, which is open to the general public, will bring forth an unusually large au- dience, especially when it is known that the lecture is to be on “Frontiers of the Universe” Mr. Baumgardt has made of this informative lecture something to which one may listen with a lasting delight. Of special note is the fact that the pictures to be shown on the screen are the latest achievements in celestial photography. A7 One of the leading social events of the year for the Scottish residents of the town is the annual Burns club recep- tion, banquet and dance to commemorate the birth of Robert Burns, Scotland’s immortal poet. Taking place at the Burritt’ Hotel on Wednesday, January 25 it has to this date all-the earmarks of a very brilliant party. In previous years the demand for reservations has been in.excess of the supply which necessarily is limited to but 135 covers. Dinner will be served at 7 o’'clock and dancing will follow. Reverend Warren S. Archibald of Hartford will r‘espond to the toast. & - The many music lovers in New Britain will be interested to know of a forthcoming concert to be given by the Wennerberg Male Chorus on Sunday afternoon, Mareh 18, at the Capitol theater. This is an annual affair sponsored and supported. by people prominent in the social life of the community. Each season the organization endeavors to give to its audience an artist of really rare musical talent. This year May Peterson of the Metropolitan Opera Company will appear as the soloist. She has an unusually clear, lovely voice and her appearance in town, by those who have heard her sing, is anticipated with a great deal of joy. ——lend in Mamaroneck and in New PERSONALS || York city.
