Washington, Jan. 13 UP—A nar- ~field. of contenders for the 73938 democratic convention was pre- _ssnted to the party’s national com- | mittes today as it sought to leap | WPEN. (GIRES NT Sponses of Formee Maharajah Show Different Views on His Marriape Flans. Bombay, Jan. 13.—(UP—The atti- tude of the two present wives of the former Maharajah of Indore towapd his torthcoming marriage to Miss Nancy Anp Miller of Seattle, Wash., |is in sharp contrast. The Senior Maharanee, his first wife, is unconcerned because her “gver the tirst guddles of controveray =208, Prince Yeshwant to tonight's Jackson Day harmony dinner, ‘With Cleveland out of the :un- ning by virtue of its failure to raise an invitation fund, Detroit and 8an Francisco stood at the head of the | field, with the former believed to have an advantage In strength !* among committeemen. Supporters of Miami, Houston and Chicage, however, contended that their eities would receive votes and would not be counted out in advance. « As talk of and for candidates de- veloped a wide stream of sentiment for Governor Smith of New York, | ‘there were indioations that the key- | : pote of harmony does not echo in | full tane from all branches of the perty’s committeemen to move for a change in the system by which the committee chalrman is selected once in four years. The reports followed others that the chairman, Clem L. Shaver of West Virginia, would reslgn. Shaver's denlal went the rounds with gossip that some delegates had con- sidered a campaign to remove him from office but had dropped it in the interest of barmony. The re-organ- ization diseussioa grew out of the contention that the present commit- tee has been only nominally active. The proposed mnew plan would have the committee elect its chair- man, his term expiring January 1 of tha national election year, instead of having him designated by the party nominee for president. ! Another phase of the discussion was the atfack of Mrs. Shaver, the chairman’s wife, upon Governor Smith before the democratic wo- men’s law enforcement league. Chairman 8haver declined to com- ‘ment on the incident beyond stating that his wife spoke only for hersclt. 8till another morsel for specula- tion was Willlam G. McAdoo's dis- closure last night that he had not pledged himaelf to refrain from com- menting on the candidacy of S8mith in hi address to the Jackson diners tonight. The man who in 1924 was Smith's chief convention contender declined, however, to indicate the nature of the speech he will make, except to say that he would give his viéws on the party’s optimistic ‘outlook. Many state delegation booms for favorite sons whirled in and around the eorrider discussion of Bmith as ‘s candidate’for party color bearer. They revolved about Senator George | of Georgia. Put forth by the rtate's delegation and endorsed also by Clark Howell, former committeeman from Georgia. Additional support for him was sought among other southern delegations opposed to ‘Smith. Others mentioned prominently | were Reed of Missouri, Pomerene of Obio.Ritchie of Maryland, Walsh ot Montana, Wooilen of Indiana, and | ‘Robinson of Arkansas. The Smith talk, with peedictions of his nomina- tion M’ the early balloting, came from geveral committeemen, includ- ing Gufty of Pennsylvania, Christen- -ven of Washington, Brennan of Illi- favor the former Maharajah abdi- cated, attains his majority soon and his future position seems secure. The Junior Maharanee, however, is still {n a condition of collapse. 8he has taken no food for days and re- fuses to see her mother or relatives, By the terms of his abdication, the former Maharajah Freceives an annual allowance of 800,000 rupees (roughly $288,000) and each wife 200,000 rupees ($72,000). His pres- ent wives complain that they have not received their allowances in full. The general feeling in Indla is that the prospective marriage is most undesirable. The munity thinks that Miss Miller can- not realize what such a marriage involves, while the Hindu opposition is based on religious grounds. It is stated that the orthodox religion does not accept converts and recog. nizes neither conversion nor a mar- riage such as is contemplated. Colombo, Ceylon, Jan. 13.—(M— The troubles of the former Mahars- jah of Indore and Miss Nancy Ann | Miller of Seattle, Wash., in arrang- |ing their forthcoming marriage have been #0 numerous that at least one member of the Maharajah's staff is beginning to wonder if the wedding ever will take place. “I am not in s position to say anything about the proposed wed- ding which may or may not come off,” this member of Indore's staff said today. Meanwhile friends of the former Maharajah think that the wedding may occur in Ceylon instead of in India and that the couple will spend their honeymoon traveling to America. It was stated at Nuwara Eliya, where the former Maharajah and Miss Miller are now staying at a hotel, that they will remain in Cey- lon until the end of February.
