Managua, Nicaragua, Jan. 12, (UP)—Rebel casualities were in- creased after a sharp skirmish be- tween a combat patrol of United |} States marines and followers of Gen- eral Augustino Sandino near Cujo, Tuesday, it was announced today. Five rcbels were Kkilled. Nine other rebels were killed n & bomb- ing raid the same day near Quilali, it wae announced previously. There were no marine casualties and the marine patrol succeeded in taking the town of San Albino with- out opposition, it was announced The combat patrol came upon the rebel band just outside of Cujo, § which is not far from San Albino, and there was a lively engagement | for a few minutes. There were some | rebels injured but the number 16| unknown. | The previous announcement of & | bombing rald said that marine | planes had circled over Quilali and had scored a direct hit in the rebel ranks. Nine dead were counted and | there were three injured. | The air raid was made without damage to the marine flyers. | The one marine mishap in the ! past 60 hours was when the second air erash occurred. The plane came down near Estell after engine| trouble had occurred, None of the flyers were injured. Also it was announced that a eorgeant and 13 members of the Nicaraguan guard had deserted from Sommotillo and were supposed- ly en route to Jjoin the Sandino forces.
