VAN THE AMAZING TI: “] KNOW she's innocent,” Vance said to District Attorney Mark- ham. “Furthermore, I know that no woman could possibly have fired the shot.” He was discussing the Benson murder, and trying to convinee Markham of the innocence of Muriel St. Clair, despite the seem- ingly damaging evidence against her., “Don’t get tl d Mark- 5 army Celt.” 1am, “that a won i=sed the notion witk a shrug., “The me don't enter into my calculatio wching conclusions! : woman for mefully.” hoot- Markham grunted indignantly. “And V1€ vou seem to have the tiuth ited all processes of de Have vou entirel “Your mind,” Vance re) WOrks on the p vou don't know isn't rstand edge, and that, since vou di explanation.” Markham adopted an attit ¢ spoke at lunch time, T by tecting crime. And an artist, by looking at a canvas, knows immediately whether it is a Corot, a Harpignies, a Rembrandt, or a Franz Hals. And just as no two faces are exactly alike, so no two natures are exactly alike ., , .” “There is,” argued Markham, “a slight difference hetween art s ” g and crime. “Psychologically, old chap, there’s none,” Vance amended evenly. “Crimes possess all the basic factors of a work of art— approach, conception, technique, imagination, attack, method and organization. A carefully planned crime is just as direct an ex- pression of the individual as a painting, for instance. And there- in lies the one great possibility of detection. Just as an expert can analyze a picture and tell you who painted it, or the person- ality and temperament of the person who painted it, so can the psychologist analyze crime and tell you who committed it—that is, if he happens to be acquainted with the person—, or else can describe to you, with almost mathematical surety, the criminal’s nature and character. “And that, my dear Markham, is the only sure and inevitable means of determining human guilt. All others are mere guess- work, unscientific, uncertain, and—perilous.” And there you have Philo Vance's theories on the detection of crime. Amazing theories, certainly, but Vance is an amazing young man, and perhaps the most fascinating of all detective characters. Proving that those theories were sound. he solved the Benson murder, one of the most baffling cases in New York’s criminal history, the story of which begins in the Herald Septem- " ber 19 under the title of “The Benson Murder Case.” “You Need a Diuretic!” and their importance If their action be- h, they do not thoroughly cleanse the blood are apt to make one dull, tired and achy with often a nagging backache, drowsy A common warning of imperfect aid the kidneys in ers have publicly recom- Milbum Co., Mfg.
