HAWATIANG IN NATIONAL SWIN Champions- Invade Greatest Aquatic Events Honolulu, Aug. 26.—(M—Swim- ming stars of Honolulu are experi- encing the greatest aquatic invasion this group of little islands has ever known. The national outdoor cham- plonships close here August 27. Hawaii’'s bld In the quest of titles will be made by Clarence Brabbe, holder of three middle dis- tance records, and Johnny Wood leading sprint swimmer of the lands. Woodd, a youth of 17, flash- ed into prominence last year and is regarded as the best prospect since Duke Kghanamoku ruled the waters of this section. Such swimmers as Johnny Weiss- muller of the Illinois A. C., Peter des Jardens of Miami and Walter Spence of Brooklyn are competing. Twelve of the twenty listed events carry national titles. They are: 440 yards free style, 880 yards free style, mile, 106 meters free styles, 800 yards relay, 300 meters relay, 100 meters breast stroke, 50 meters back stroke, medley club relay, spring board diving, plain high diving and fancy high diving. Y., yurchasing for a ‘family” that ranges from 1,500 to 2,400 persons. Her duties as a purchasing agent ixclude buying for the county hos- jital, the penitentiary, the alms- louse, the jail, the county home for caildren ,the county laboratory and a sanitarium. “We buy everything from kitchen 1ans to threshing machines,” Mrs. Jones explained. “This includes uni- farms for the prisoners, materials fer children's clothing, drugs and medicines for the hospital and san- ftarium. The biggest part of the job is ‘shopping around,’ keeping in touch with market quotations, knowing values and keeping a sharp eye on the merchants to make sure that they are dealing squarely with us. “W> buy no second rate food stuffs, a fact which certain whole- salers learn with great difficulty.” GYPSIES PROSPER ‘Witches and Fortune Tellers Make Gosd Living in Towns and Cities of Spain Vakncia, Spain, Aug. 26. (P— ‘Witctes and fortune-tellers ply a profitble trade in Madrid and other big cties of Spain. Th: great majority of them are or mock gypsies with y skins. They confine their operations to accosting well-dressed women on the strects and prom- ising them fortune in their love af- fairs in return for a piece of sil- ver. Otters frequent the better por- tions of the city and insinuate themselves into the graces of the maidservants. Most of these are illiterate peasant girls. The gypsies give them love-potions to strenithen the affections of recal- citrant beaux. They tell the maids with certainty that great nobles wiil fall in loke and marry them, endowing them with riches. There is strong suspicion that the blame for various robberies niay be laid to some of these itin- verant purveyors of good fortune, for ‘hey learn from the servants the cistoms of the householders. A higher class of fortune-teller exists also. These calling them- eelves astrologers and occullists They have offices which are fre- quenty changed owing to police actior. There they are surrounded by the usual paraphernalia of ter- restizl globes, cauldrons and crys- tals with which they convince even women of the higher class that they can foretell the future. BILL RAISER AGAIN ACTIVE Blerchants Cautioned Against Ac- cepting $5 Note Raised to $20 and In Circulation In This City. A warning to beware of $5 bills raised to the denomination of $20 has been issued to storekeepers in this city by a federa] agent who has been investigating the appearance ot such a piece of paper money here. It was the eighth “raised” bill pass- ed here within a few months, others having been detected about the middle of May. The federal man be- licves that the bill is a local pro- duction. for none has turned up in other cities.
