NAVY STORM SEEN INNEXT CONGRESS ‘May Try to Equal That of Great " Britain Rapid City, 8. D.,, Aug. 8 (UP)— Secretary of Navy Wilbur arrives here today to talk over with Presi- dent Coolidge the future program of the American navy, following the breakdown of the Geneva arms limi- tation conference. The United Press is informed that the navy department’ already has worked out a project for building up the naval strength on a basis com- mensurate with the British naval program. The American scale would provide 20 additional = 10,000 ton cruisers including eight now under construction or authorized. It also would provide more capital ships to replace those which will be consider- ed obsolete in 1931. Wilbur long has been an advocate of a strong navy. In fact of the president's demand for curtailment | he has—as all other navy secretaries in history — insisted that foreign powers have an edge on this coun- | try and that the United States should strengthen its sea force. Coolidge was not surprised at the collapse of the Geneva conference. | He knew it was coming five days be- fore the complete breakdown was offictally made known. At that time he served warning that the United States could not be pledged to any program which increased the strength of the navies of the world | over the present status. The president wanted a curtall- | ment for economies and tax reduc- tio: but now that his effort has fail- ed, he has refused to make know officially his intentions. It is generally admitted that (1104 United States does not expect to en- | ter a naval race with Britain or any other country but that she must take | steps to protect her vast coast. There is certain to be a big navy fight in : the next congress when the naval| appropriations bill comes up. It is expected to be complicated by bills | for immediate increase of the Amer- | fcan naval strength to balance that of Great Britain. i Wilbur’s arrival added more sub- jects for discussion by the presldenfl than he has crowded into a one day's | fime in recent years. The Sacco- ' Vanzettl bombings in the east are | causing comment and the pmtdem! also is perplexed by the problem of | choosing a successor to Governor | General Leonard Wood of the Phil- | ippines who died Saturday in Bos- ton. Most prominent among those men- | tioned as successor to Wood are Car- mi Thompson of Ohio, who made a personal investigation of the islands | for the president; Henry L. Stim- | son, personal negotiator for Mr. | Coolidge in Nicaragua: former Sen. Rice Means of Colorado. Others include Frank V. Hodges, | treasurer of the republican national | committee; former Senator James | W. Wadsworth, New York, and for- | = Senator Irvine Lenroot of Wis- i iew of the comment against | acco-Vanzetti execution the | sident is more carefully guarded now than at any time since he. be- came the nation's chiet executive. | The entire summer white house de- | tail of secret service men is on duty | in addition to 50 soldiers from Ft., Meade. | The guard now resembles that of | war times. When Mr. Coolidge went | to church Sunday a detail of secret service men went ahead to search the church. | FEAR T0 TELL WOMAN OF DEATH OF BABY Child Dies In Mother's Arms As Auto Pins Them Against Brick Wall—Son and Father Held. w York, Aug. 8 (P)—Mrs. Mary Spero lay in a Brooklyn hospital | seriously injured today, unaware that | the two-year-old son she had he'd in | her arms was killed when an auto- | mobile pinned them against a brick | wall last.night. She regained consciousness long_ enougl. to ask whether her baby wags | safe. Physiclans, fearing the shock | might prove fatal, told her the child | was alive, and she again lapsed into unconsciousness. Trank Cassino, owner of the auto- | mobile, had permitted his son, Peter | to take the wheel just before the | accident occurred. The son had no | license, and with his father, was held on a charge of homicide.
