WEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, THURSDAY, JULY 28 1927 600D CITIENS NEEDED BY GOVT. Contioal Changing of Systems Fatile, Dr. Garfield Says | Willlamstown, Mass., July 28.—(P) | International amity and understand- ing depend on an enlightened citi- zenry rather than a revised govern- ment, Dr. Harry A. Gartield, presi- | dent of the institute of politics, de- | clared In & convocation speech be- | fore the seventh annual session of that body here this afternoon. “Why not stop tinkering with the machinary of government, therefore. Why not let it stand as it is?” he queried. “Why add commission to commission, and pile office on office when, on the simple device of citizen | ‘onferences we may accomplish all that is really desirable.” | “Conference, the educational method, is the most potent method the citizen can employ, because it dispels ignorance and es out fear,” he asserted. “More is ac- | | the immediate results. “They are opposed by the sinister attitude of scheming men, while the conferees mect and the world waits, brooding and fear hover in the back- ground, we may not be able to offset But at any rate, we may know, and knowing, refuse to be deceived.” NOW YOU ASK ONE FILL IN THE BLANKS This is a Lot weather quiz, and will r ire less mental exertion han answering question t the ten sentences below the correct words. 1—James “The Old Swimmin® Hole.” 2—The entrance to San rbor s called “The wrote Fran- Roman god of war was member the 4 ar cry in the was Fill in the | Tllinols supreme court. CORP. TAX SLICE NOW IS PROBABLE Several Other Forms of Reduc- tion Also Gonsidered Rapid City, 8. D, July 28 (P—A slash of one or two per cent in the corporation tax seems destined to! form the keystone of the prospective | tax reduction program. Administration leaders who have conferred here with President Cool- idge have put this move down as one of the first to be considered in the tax cutting planned for nexi session. Some democratic leaders favored such a reduction last session and so concerted action on this point, at least, appears probable. Other points which seem likely to ;galn administration favor include re- peal o fthe remaining war “nui- sance” levies, including those on theater admissions and club dues. However, & row is impending on elimination ‘of the automobile pas- senger car tax. Republicans who have come here endorsed a cut in | Pointing to the:surplus around $600,000,00 which was piled up in the treasury during the fiscal year ended June 30, some democratic leaders have Indicated there would be a fight to make the total slash at least $500,000,000. A larger re- duction was sought by democrats two years ago. Senator Smoot of Utah, chairmar of the finance committee, says a re- duction in the 13 1-3 per cent cor- poration tax to 12 per cent will cost the government $150,000, or half of |the total cut in taxes he favors. He and other republican leaders who have talked out here think the normal income tax rates are about ]ruht and they would give reltef to income taxpayers now in the class of those with incomes between $15,000 and $75,000. Whether any further reductions will be made on the normal in come tax rates or whether the exemptions | of $1,500 for single persons and $3,500 for married persons will be raised therefore seems to hinge, in the eyes of the administration spokesmen, on whether it will be safe to go above the $350,000,000 total reduction mark now tentative- ly set by them. MRS, STILLWAN HAS LAY PROBLE “Bud’s” Marriage Cuts 0 Em- ployment of Bride’s Kin New York, July 28 (A—The New York Daily News in a dispatch from Grand Mere, Que., says Mrs. James A. Stillman, Sr., whose son, “Bud” married Lena Wilson, her one-time servant, is puzzled over the financial and soclal status of her newly ac- quired kinsmen. Mrs. Wilson and Lena's six sis- |ters have for years lived'on the wages they recelved as servants from the Stillmans. “Of course,” said Mrs. Stillman, “I can’'t have Lena's mother and sis- | ters employbd here as servants after Lena’s marriage to my son. At the same time I refuse to permit Lena's family to even think they ean profit financially as a result of the mar- riage of Bud and Lena. It was on that question that the Wilsor family and I broke last week.” Mrs. Stillman, who said at the time of the dispute that she woulc turn them from the home she hac provided and stop their charge ac counts to her name in stores, indi- cated she would deal with themr more leniently. “These are my people and I know them,” she said, remarking that tc natives of the region sums above one hundred dollars were beyon¢ their understanding.
