Similarly, the Isle of Man has not made peace with Russia since the Crimean war in 1854. San Marino is one of the smallest republics in the world, having & population of 9,500. Established in the tenth century, it enjoys sover- eignty over 32 square miles on ‘the ! top of the steepest mountain In the | Italian peninsula. That sovereignty has been respected for 900 years by popes and kings, and even the mighty Napoleon. Occupying its mountain top, with a sheer drop of 2,437 feet on one side, San Marino has always felt sate from invasion, although its army numbers only 1,200 men and its artillery consists of one 75 mm. field piece presented to it after the world war by the king of Italy. Its gun has never been fired, since, no matter how it might be pointed, the shot would land in foreign ter- ritory and cause international com- plications. The Isle of Man is the lozenge- shaped island which has plenty of room in the Irish sea, being 33 miles long and 12 miles wide. It enjoys virtually the status of a dominion in the British commonwealth.
