- 2 STATES USING [ATEST METHODS Electritid Farms Are Being Improved Minneapolls, July 8 (#—The age of electricity is dawning rapidly on the farm. Four years ago the University of Minnesota established the first rural electrification profect in the nation at Red Wing, Minn. Today there are 25 such projects in as many states, 11l experi ienting with application of vlectric energy to the tasks of agri- “ulture. 1" rmers in more than a score of states, says Prof. E. A. Stewart, supervisor of the Red Wing station, are using clectricity to operate th: ".ing machines, ensilage cutters, pumps, hay lifts, barn ventilators, feed grinders milking machines, saws, grain cleaners, root cutters and refrigerators, as well as household devices. Outstanding developments, Stew- art says, are the successful appli- cation, of electrical power to dairy barn ventilation, to dairy refrigera- tion and to poultry raising. Refrigeration is becoming a vital problem on dairy farms, Stewart points out. Until lately the farmer could refrigerate his products by putting them into a pail at the bot- tom of a well rope. But now dairy- ing is becoming a big business—it neared the $200,000,000 mark last vear in Minnesota — and more elab- orate cooling systems are demanded. Engineers at the Red Wing station are working on a refrigerator de- signed exclusively for farm use. Minnesota poultry farms doing an- nual businesses approximating $100,- 000 are experimenting with electrical devices, according to Stewart, and have already found that electrically heated incubators produce high per- centage hatches of well-developed chicks, and that the electric light- ing of poultry houses during the win- ter increases egg production by four or five eggs a month for each hen. Says British Actress Is Not a Good Film Type London, July 8 (A)—British critics who are trying to discover why England has produced so few wo- men film stars say their actresses lack the necessary sense of adven- ture and pluck. Most of the younger London stage women have attempted to act in the films, but the outstanding British motion picture actresses ad- " \mittedly are few. Some British producers say Eng- land types do not photograph well. The actresses blame the situation on poor direction and unsatisfac- tory technique of photography.
