C ECLECTICS TAKE = STAND IN TRIAL el of Their Medical Qualtics- tions and Schooling New Haven, July 8 (P—While a student for three years at Middle- sex College of Physicians and Sur- meons at Cambridge, Mass., Dr. Wil- liam Levy of Hartford testified to- day in the hearing of his and six otfier appeals from the revocation of licenses to practice in Connecticut, he failed in one subject his fresh- man year, two his sophomore year and one his junior year. Made Up Faflures n each case he made up his fail- ures by reexamination before the opening of the next college year, studying during the summer. He was unable to remember, however, in what subjects he failed, or the full list of the subjects he took each year. When Dr. Levy returned to the stand today he was cross-examined by Attorney A. B. O'Keefe of West Haven. The appellant has been rep- resenting himself, and Attorney O'Keefe offered last night, with the | court’s permission, to aid him in pre- senting his case. With Drs. Lerner and Lilienthal of Bridgeport, Campo of Stamford, Mower of Hartford and others, Dr. Leyy left Middlesex for St. Louis c6Hege after commencing the work of his senior year at the Cambridge institution, he said because of the rumor testified to by Drs. Camp and Lerner that Middlesex was to he closed . In response to questions of Spe- ciak Attorney General James W. Carpenter, Dr. Levy testified to tak- ing a number of subjects at Middle- sex listed in the catalog of that col- lege as given in the senior year. He said Jhe took his senior year at St. [ college. Although he made applications to the M chusetts board while an interne in the Malden, Mass., hos- pital, he did not take the examina- tion until about the time of the grand jury investigation in 1923 of this state. Credentials from Middlesex and original high and preparatory school qredits, he said, were not available because lost by the St. Louis college. He was also unable to locate his Connecticut license and said he had ne certificate of service from his in- terneship at the Malden hospital, al- though he produced a certificate al- lowing him to practice medicine as an interne there and a letter invit- ing him to go there as an interne. He did not attend the commence- ment exercises at St. Louis college, May 18, 1921, when his class was graduated, because of a scarcity of funds and, more important, a head- ache, he said. Dr. Feldman Testifles Dr. William H. Feldman of Hart- ford, said he attended the St. Louis college one year, 1917-18, receiving his degree and diploma there. Be- fore coming to Connecticut in 1921 to take the eclectic board examina- tion he wrote to Dr. James E. Hair of Bridgeport, secretary of the board. Dr. Kemp under whom Dr. Ieldman said he studied medicine, was not listed as a faculty member in the college ‘catalog until two vears after the appellant’s gradua- tion. At St. Louis he said he studied only the allopathic, or regular sys- ten of practicing medicine. His only prepmedical credential, he said, was a “Blair certificate” from Illinois, mentioned on his ap- plication to the Connecticut board as education in the Illinois public schools. The application also men- tioned an Indiana examiner's certi- ficate. Dr. Feldman explained that he signed the application in blank and that it was then filled in by Dr. Robert Adcox, self-confessed agent for the procuring of “fake” certifi- cates and salesman for “fake” di- plomas of two colleges. When Dr. Feldman went to St. Louis first the lodgl. 5 house of Dr. Adcox was recommended to him by students at the college, he said. Dr. Adcox went with him to the col- lege, where he presented his creden- tials, including the “Blair certificate’ to Dean Briggs. He had never met Dr. Adcox until he was directed to his lodging house, he said. Drowning of Four Men h From Fishing Boat Told St. John's, N.
