ONE ARM LONGH MAGRATE DEAD Joim R. Thompson Bought a Restanrant at World’s Fair Chicago, June 18 (M—John R. Thompson's belief that he could make a better cup of coffee than one served him here in World's Fair Daya' started him in the restaurant business that netted him millions as he added to his “one arm” string, it was recalled today by friends of the late capitalist. Mr. Thompson died yesterday at the Highlands, hia Lake Forest es- tate, after an illness of six years. Thompson was 28 years old when he came to Chicago from down state with his bride to visit the Colum- bian ~exposition in 1893. After they had seen the fair, the pair came to- ward the downtown section and wandered into a restaurant on South State street. It wasn’t a pretentious place they selected, mnor was the meal particularly delectable, but the coffec was bad, very bad. “I can make a better cup of cof- fee than that myself,” said Thomp- son, according to the story he used to relate. “Maybe you want to try it,” the proprietor rejoined. “Maybe T do, and I will,” Thompson. “Buy the place said and you can,” came the next reply. Benbow Resort, Cal., June 18 (P— Mad Bull, the Karook Indian lead- ing in the 480 mile marathon run from San Francisco to Grant's Pass, Oregon, arrived here last night, a distance of 210 miles from the start- ing point, after having covered the 73 miles from Willits in twenty- four hours. Cochee and Melika, two of the Zuni runners, were approxi- ‘mately nine miles behind the lead- cr, but the Zunis planned to con- tinue while Mad Bull was to rest here. Jamon, the other Zuni entrant and the winner of the $100 prize for be- ing the first to arrive at San Rafael, is being taken from Cloverdale to Coolidge Park, south of here, for medical examination. Examination of Leonard by Dr. F. E. Goldstein, club physician fail- ed to disclose any definite injuries. Leonard and his manager, Jimmy Betts, of Albany, declared that Al- berts who is a negro, hit low.
