ELECTROCUTION IS CALLED EASY DEATH Warden of Ohio Penitentiary Approves Method Columbus, Ohio, May 13 (UP)— {No one wants to dic in the electric chair, yvet it is the easiest of all deaths, according to Warden P. E. Thomas of Ohio Penitentiary. Warden Thomas, who has de a careful study of the subject, recom- mends the electric chair as far su- perior to other forms of violent death, and he Is willing to recom- mend it in preference to death by «sphyxiation, drowning, carbolic acid, a leap from a tall building, or even b a shot from a pistol. A current of 1950 volts is applied at the start,” he said in extolling the merits of the chair. Almost instantaneously — in less than 1-240th of a second, according to syllographic tests — heart action stops “It takes 24 times as long as that 1-10th of a second, before the se: tion made by the prick of a needle at the base of the skull, is recorded by the brain.” Thomas went on to explain the ef- | Ifec of the charge carried by the chair, which if left on long enough, would cremate the body of the vie- tim. “While the current is on the h |beat again, although the man in the| chair is not breathing. The man is| dead. The heart has no life-sustain- |ing qualities. Its beat cannot be ac- |celerated nor strengthened. “As long as the voltage passes |through the body the respiratory or- | |zans are paralyzed. This causes the air to be freed from the lungs. At| the same time the blood corpuscles | egrate, { ither of these, the paralysis of the lungs or the disintegration of the | blood corpuscles, is of itselt fatal. | “Blood 6f an clectrocuted person | does not congeal. The shattered cor- ' puscles can never be put together | again and the idea that an electro- | person may be revived s | The warden declared that it is casier to elcctrocute a healthy man than a sickly one. “A sickly man does not dic as ly for the reason that his skin is dry and does not conduct the elec- tricity as well as when it is damp And for the same reason, it is easier to0 exccu’: a man in the summer tinme when his body is bathed in perspira- tion than in the winter, when his skin is usually dry,” he said. Thomas said that during the elec- trocution the condemned man’s body | temperature rises to 148 and the ! temperature of the brain to 200 de- grees, although man cannot live at higher temperature than 110 de- s Philadelphia police will use blood tests to determine intoxication if ex- | - | periments now under way prove suc- cessful, FRANK E.
