.. TELEGRAHIS SOLD T0 SCRIPPS Newspaper Syndicate Takes | Over 01 Publication New Tork, Feb. 11 (#—The New | York Evening Telegram today be- came the property of the Scripps- Howard interests. Willlam T. Dewart, owner of the New York Evening Sun and presi- dent of the New York Telegram Company, said the decision to sell the Telegram “was reached because the growth of the Sun demands, so far as my newspaper interests are concerned, that I devote my time to one newspaper, The Sun.” Roy W. Howard, of the Scripps- Howard organization, issued a state- ment saying that the new manage- ment contemplates no radical hanges in the editorial content of the paper. The present staff will be taken over in its entirety. “New men and new features will be added,” Mr. Howard's statement continued.” The changes that will evolve gradually will take the form of building up rather than tearing down, They will be changes based upon our natlon-wide experience which embraces efforts extending from Washington and Baltimore in the east to San Francisco and San Diego in the west.” The Telegram is the twenty-sixth rewspaper in the Scripps-Howard chain. “It's editing management,” Mr. Howard mid, “will be in the hands of men who have a stock- holding interest, and a very consid- erable amount of its shares will be set aside to be acquired by employe- fnvestors.” Mr. Dewart, in his statement, said: “It may be of interest to the com- munity to know that the Telegram was not sold to the highest bidder. | Tn fact, a substantial sum In exocess | of the very handsome consideration received from the Scripps-Howard | interests might have been had for the property; but I felt that the fu- | ture of the paper, the welfare of its | present oragnization and the inter- | ests of the community would be best | served and most surely safeguarded | by a sale to the new owners. “A factor in the consideration was | my knowledge that under the Scripps-Howard system of operation a very considerable block of the Telagram stock will be set aside for the management and for the con- cern's investment companies in ! which all employes are permitted to acquire holdings.” R, R.
