" PRINGESSASTRID RAVING RARDTINE Studying Two New Languages ~News of World Women Oklahoma City, (—A mother of three children, Mrs. Mabel Bassett led the democratic ticket in the gen- eral election in Oklahoma. Although the names of a number of popular state officials were on the ticket, Mrs. Bassett had a plurality of 60,299 votes over her male re- publican opponent for the office of commissioner of charities and cor- rections, to which she was seeking re-election. Her popularity is attri- buted to the fact that for sixteen years she has been active in wel- fare work, in a number of which she served without salary. Princess Astrid’s Dilemma. Brussels (P—Princess Astrid s working hard at the two languages of her new homeland, which is bi- lingual—French and Flemish. French she already speaks a lit- tle, although she is more sure of her English, and prefers to use that in talking to her husband, Crown Prince Leopold, who has no Swedish, which is his wife's mother tongue. Flemish was new to Astrid, and she did not understand a word of | a welcoming address which was read | to her when she landed at Antwerp, the seat of Tlemish culture. Herman Teirlinck, a noted Flem- | ish literateur, has been appointed to | teach the princess. More Smoke Cars for Women London (A—Women smokers have revolutionized the ‘subway rules whereby no smoking used to be permitted in elevators or cars unless labelled “smoking,” and these latter constituted 60 per cent of the sub- way rolling stock. Now that women habituaily smoke on their way to and from business, the demand for seats in smoking cars has grown so much that the percentage of the latter has had to be increased to 70 per cent. German Women Doctors Berlin (A-—The number of women doctors in Germany has increased from 195 to 1627 between the years 1913 and 1926. Amazons Eject Hecklers London (A) hingled amazons, whose hobby is throwing noisy wo- men interrupters out of meetings, | have been formed into a special pa- trol of the British Fascists. They came into prominence at Kensington Town Hall when they “ousted” several women hecklers during Commander Locker Lamp- son’s speech. Thelr latest bag was 15 women who were pitched into the street from a meeting of the Junior Imperial League. The chief of staff js a big muscular young woman, Miss Lintern Arman, with red shin- gled hair. | Leisure Lady's Craze London (M—English Society as ! written with a capital ‘S” has gone to fortune telling for amusement. | Private fortune telling parties during the morning hours is the latest craze of ladies of the leisure class. Woman Film Producer TLondon (P—Britain’s first woman | film producer, Miss Dina Shurey, be- lieves women have as much chance as men in film producing, and per- haps more. “Women have greater originality than men,” asserted the mew pro- | ducer, “they have usually a greater sense of artistic values, and are bet- ter qualified to judge the ‘human interest’ power of a picture than men. “British films will succeed when halt of the present directing forces is eliminted,” Miss Shurey ventured. She contends that most of the Brit- ish producers have no enthusiasm for the goods they have to sell. RED SCHOOLHOUSE SHOVED OFF MAP Modern Youth's Rebellion Makes Many Changes Geneva, Dec. 17 (P—The little red school house and all that its sim- plicity implies has been shoved off the picture by “the rebellion of vouth” which sees the world today | through eyes nearly as practical as were those of their parents of the old fashioned days of the past. Conclusions of a questionnaire elr- | culated by the Y. M. C. A. in 36 countrics, show that modern youth believes the old home system of | Western civilization has completely broken down; that parents do mot understand real “home-making,” as they did formerly, and that the chil- dren of the present are not inclined to submit to authority unless they can be shown good cause. Base Discipline on Love The questionnaire was amplified by the discussions of the “parlia-| ment of youth” at Helsingsfors last | August at which 46 nations were represented. The results have been circulated by Y. M. C. A. headquar- ters here. The only discipline worth anything in the home now, youth is shown to be convinced, is based on respect and love, and not on fear. As to how far youth should be allowed to go making its own decisions, opinion was divided. Youth made it clear that it is not prepared to accept decisions made by men in years past. Youth wants leadership, but leadership based on understanding, not on tradition or a mere difference in age.
