NEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1926, FIGHTER DIED OF BRAIN HEMORRHAGE This Is Coroner’s Verdict in Hartford Case Hartford, Conn, Dec. 15 (P— Latest developments in the death of Charles Pegulihan, who succumbed to injuries suffered in a semi-final bout with Al Friedman of Boston at the State Armory here Monday night, were: Statement of Medical Examiner Henry N. Costello and Dr. John Mc- Lean, who performed the autopsy at St. Francis' hospital yesterday, that death was caused by hemro- rhages of the brain brought on by severe blows on the head. Declaration by State Athletic Commissioner Thomas E. Donohue that every precaution had been taken before the bout and that it was an “unfortunate accident.” Arrangements to ship body by French liner Paris on December 23 from New York to home in Pau, France, expenses of shipment to be met from fund now being subscribed by Hartford residents. Announcement by Robert Ludel- ine, former manager of Eugene Cri- qui, ex-world's champion, and now ! associated with French boxers in America, that he 1{s quitting the boxers now handled by him and severing all connection with the sport, returning to FKrance with Pegulihans’ body. Continuance of the case of Fried- man until December 23, pending for- mal finding of Coroner J. Gilbert Calhoun. Regard as formality since boxing is legal sport in Con- necticut and Pegulihan was fatally injured in the course of a regularly conducted boxing match. Certain formalities must be met before it will be possible to ship the boxer’s body back to his native France, and Budeline will visit the French consul at New York tomor- row to secure the necessary papers. State Athletic Commissioner Thomas E. Donohue of New Lon- don, while voicing deep regret at the sad Incident today said that it was “an unfortunate accident, such as might happen in any field of sport. “If the statistics in my possession are correct, boxing has a lower fa- tality rate than any of the sports in which there is actual physical contact. Everything connected with the affair was legal. The French boxer was carefully examined by Dr. McLean and found to be in splendid physical condition. “There was nothing in the way of precaution that was not taken according to all the provisions made for the safety of all boxers partici- pating in bouts in this state.” ‘Analyze Liquor Taken in Spring Street Raid A continuance until Saturday morning to allow time for an analysis of alleged liquor taken by Officers John C. Stadler and Willlam P. Hayes in a raid late yesterday afternoon on a store at the corner of Spring and Winter streets, was ordered in police court this morning by Judge W, C. Hungerford, on recommendation of Prosecuting At- torney J. G. Woods. Judge F. B.| Hungerford, representing the alleged | proprietor, Michael Salamon, aged 40, of 49 Hurlburt street, agreed to the continuance after entering a plea of not guilty to the charge of viola- tion of the liquor law. According to the police, Salamon threw the con- tents of a jar into a lnk as they entered, but they recovered enough for an analysis.
