Fur waistcoats and mittens for Aafternoon wear have appeared on Piccadilly and along Oxford Street. The mittens are made of supple short-lengthed fur. On chilly days | the walstcoat is slipped over velvet ! frocks. Women are wearing the fur Wwalstcoats to ° afternoon bridge parties instead of brocade coatees. The walstcoats are made sometimes from inexpensive ermine-dyed rab- bit; again from moleskin. ‘Variation tn Eton Crop One of the variations of the Eton erop this season is to have a lock of hair drawn from the back under- neath the ear. It is not ‘easy to train these back locks to lle pefectly flat, even with the aid of brillfantine, so the English miss has brought out some original earrings to help. Now the rebellious locks are passed through a ring small enough to hold it firmly, yet not too small to spoil the line of the halr. Bead Belts With Pearls A revival of feminine interest in Indian bead trimming, has inspired the fashionable designers to execute duplicates of the native belts and necklaces with pearls and other precious stones. New Motoring Fashions Robinson Crusoe’s influence fis belng felt in the new motoring fash- fons which include long cross-over coat vests of gray goat fur, coming high up at the thrcat in the most approved Crusoe manner. The new fur coat-vest is not unlike an elon- gated walstcoat and reaches a few | inches below the edge of the coat | under which it is worn. Polished Steel Again Marcastie jewelry, those rings and brooches of highly polished steel that were 80 popular in the 17th and 15th centuries, are the vogue in ! England again. Genuine antique broches and rings are bringing high | prices in the market while modern ! reproductions are equally in evi- dence. . | Cannibalistic Influence Even the cannibal contributes gomething to the make-up of the | modern English Miss. The very| newest evening frocks are very simi- | lar to those worn by the belles of tho Solomon Isles. Long ostrich | plumes are substituted by the civiliz- ed Mayfalrite for the tumeric leaves and Hibiscus fibre of the dusky debutante. The bodice worn with the | new feather evening dress is tight- | fitting and made of embroldered chiffon. Bustles of Flowers | British dressmakers are placing hustles on the new evening frocks. | | Those recently seen wore made en- | § tirely of flowers of blending realistic shades of mauve, pink and purple with black centers. They made an attractive decoration. . Under the flower bustle, thers hangs from the frocks a mare's tall of pleated ninon. | The now fashionable mare's tail is & sort of cross between a sash and a train. It reaches just below the | bottom of the dress. Beauty Patches Back Peauty patches are back in Eng- land. They are placed on the back of the neck. Wearers of these beauty patches generally leave off jewelry which otherwise would distract at- tention. Some of the more original designa are little plgs. “Bodice” Now Proper It I8 no longer a blunder to speak ot “bodices” since dressmakers are slipping back into the habit to de- scribe the top portion of dresses. It is ‘a sign of the growing revival of dresses which require more “mak- ing” and “fitting’” than reccnt fashions have demanded. High-Collared Jumper A very high-collared sleeveless Jumper is being featured among the English winter styles. It is of black velvet richly adorned with hand- painted roses and a high collar but- toned to the ears and worn over & filmy skirt of finely pleated, black chiffon. Brightly colored buttons, brooches or arrows are used as fasteners. Women's Evening Suft The “Jacobite Laird” evening sult {s one of the English women’s vari- ations of fashion. A little velvet coat, short and very straight, with lace ruffles at the neck and wrists covers a soft white silk shirt. The kilted skirt is not necessarily of tartan. Any kind of gorgeous color- ing on a dark background carries out the idea suffictently. With a shingled head and black patent leather shoes with large slver buckles, the wearer looks as though she had just stepped out of a Van- dyck picture. Evidence of Asiatic Migration Discovered Seattle, Dec. 10. (P—Half buried mud hovels of primitive design, held | upright by ivory tusks, found on un- inhabitated, rocky islet in Bering sea, have furnished additional evi- dence that the first inhabitants of America might have come from Asla, by way of Alaska. The dwellings were discovered by officers of the cutter Algonquin ef the United States coast guard's Arc- | tic patrol, while cruising the eastern | edge of St. Lawrence island, midway between Alaska and Siberia. | The islets were off the southeast | cape of St. Lawrence island. In the frozen earth the guardsmen uncov- | ered skulls and bones of humans and | lower animals and crude metal ‘m- | plements. | Two of the skulls were forwarded | to the Smithsonian institution. A | peculiarity of the skulls found .on | the island was that one side of the | jaws of each appeared to be more developed than the other.
