STORM'S TOLL IN LIVES NOW 1S 16 Shipping on Lakes May Be Tied Up for Winter f New York, Dec. 7 () — North- castern states and eastern Canada | today counted a toll of 16 dead from | record breaking early season low | temperatures and snowfall of the | past few days which also caused ice blockades that threatened to tie up lake and river shipping for the win- | ter. There were 12 dead in Now Eng- | land alone while New York recorded three and New Jersey one. Consider- able suffering was also reported and the larger cities spent thousands of | dollars for the removal of SOW, which in places reached a depth of 12 inches. Rail and automobile traf- fle was rapldly approaching normal, however. | No deaths were reported at sea or | in Inland waters, although there was | considerable damages to shipping. | Fourteen steamers were ice-bound in | the . Lawience river in Quebec, | seven vessels were wrecked off Nova | Scotia and New Brunswick, and fish- | ing and barge fleets In several ports | wers badly erippled. At Lockport, N. Y., an ice jam blocked canal gates and held up west | bound barges, probably the last fleet | of the season, until a tug succeeded | in breaking through. At Whitehall, ar Albany, 26 boats bound south rom Lake Champlain were ice- | locked and 40 other craft were tied | up at various points along the barge | cana!. A passageway was broken through yesterday, but rather than Tisk being frozen in the canal, skip- pers had their craft towed back into the harbor in Lake Champlain. | The port of Bangor, Me., today | was ofticially closed and ferry serv- | ice from Bangor to Brewer suspend- | ed for the winter. Mosehead lake was closed to navigation, also. The Canadian schooner A. F. Davidson has been abandoned by her crew in | the Bay of Fundy, while at Isleford, | Me., the three masted schooner Emile F. Northam lay broadside on Cranberry Isle after she broke adrift in a gale and smashed through a fleet of 22 fishing craft in the harbor. A new coast guard boat was carried along with the Northam but not damaged. Old time canal and lake | men said that not for many years | had the waterways been closed by ice so early in the winter.
