WISGONSIN HURDER INQUIRY ON TODAY Knother Suspect, Young Suicide, Found in Chicago Prairie Du Chien, Wis, Dec. 4 (P —Great Falls, Mont, police were @sked by Crawford county officers today to look in the home there of Albert Severson for Erdman Olson, Wwanted for the murder of Clara Ol- 8on, his sweetheart. Severson is a brother-in-law of Ol- son’s father. Another suspeet, Dead. Chicago, Dec. 4 (A—The unclaim- ed body of a youth who killed him- self at a hotel h ur weeks ago was believed last night possibly to De that of Erdman Olso; 8 the murderer of Clara Prairie Due Chien, Wis. Sherift Harry Sherwood of Prairie Du Chien viewed the boc morgue and found it resembled that of the boy charged with slaying the 22-year-old girl whose body was un- earthed yesterday along a logging trail in the Kickapoo valley. The dead youth was registered at the hotel where he took life a “John Carr.” sou; Olson ts Called In. hien, Wis, Dec. (P In a setting endowed with all the gtarkness of an Ibsen drama, author- itles today sought to tear away th well of mystery surrounding the slay- ing of Clara Olson, Norse farmer's daughter. Three pathologists were summoned Yo view the clay cloaked body of the 22-year-old girl in an effort to de- termine how she came to her death. Her body was found in a shallow hillside grave overlooking the home of her missing sweetheart, Erdman Olson, who has been charged Wwith her murder. Meanwhile the unclaimed body of a suicide in a morgue at Chicago became a new focal point in the search for the boy who wrote in a sarewell letter to his parents that *1 would rather take death than captivity.” Officers found the youth, avho killed himself in a hotel four weeks ago, to be closely similar to Olson. Investigation also turned to Great Falls, Mont., for a clue, through disclosure that relatives there cently had transmitted to Erdman family a communication which f{t was thought might have pertained to his whereabouts. From surrounding states came messages reporting the arrest of suspects, as the state made the first move to discover whether Clara died by firearms, club or poi-} son. When this s accomplished the state will seek evidence to substan- tiate the warrant charges against the girl’s sweetheart, who has not been seen since he quit Gale college on September 27, the day after Clara's father threatened him with arrest unless the girl was found. FAMILY SKELETONS RATTLE OMINOUSLY (Continued from First Page) i uch absurd accusations I em- | phatically deay. | “I have done everything possible | to make Mrs. Chaplin happy in a rational way. My sole desire has been to maintain a sane and peace- | ful, happy home for my wife, my babies and myselt and I have done everything possible to contribute to | this. | “I surrounded her with every comfort and granted her every de- sire. | “Her mother lived with wus, in| fact her whole family had the free | | run of my house. It this constitutes | cruel and inhuman treatment then I {do not know the meaning of the| words. Immediately after our mar- | riage I allowed her unlimited credit | | with all cafes, hotels, stores in the | city. Perhaps gratifying these tastes | was a mistake. As these privileges have been abused. | “Very often I have returned from | work only to find that she had been out all day, leaving the babies alone with the nurse, or on other occa- sions I would find a party of | strangers at my | home to whom I had never been ineroduced. “I have lived in Los Angeles fif- | teen years. I believe I have gained a large number of interesting friends. | These friends loyally welcomed Mrs. Chaplin upon our marriage. I have given frequent dinners and enter- | tainments in my home believing my friends would interest Mrs. Chaplin my friends have often entertained us but Mrs. Chaplin has all too fre- quently indicated that she preferred | friends of her own whom she pre- |ferred entertaining at restaurants {and at my own home without me. | | "I regret the necessity of making | | these statements but I will not toler- | |ate slanderous falsehoods from any- | | (Signed) “Charles Spencer Ch:\p-i lin.” Here's Her Reply | To which Mrs. Chaplin replied: | “Money doesn’t always bring hap- piness. The fact that he has given me money and arranged credit at | the stores was merely his method n(l attempting to console me for his fre- | quent absence from me and the | babies. Nor does his furnishing me | | with money and credit mean that he | | was a good husband or a good | | father. | “Since I have been married to| him I have made many of my own clothes and it is only recently I have | bought any at the stores. “As far as the question of friends is concerned, he would never meet {my friends, as he always insisted | that they were common, | “He continued to tell me that T should not expect him to spend all | of his time with me. He said that he couldn’t bear to do so, as 1 was not intellectual. “He has threatened repeatedly to make me sick of him as he said that T and my family were ‘yellow’. He is now holding the clothing of | my babies, of mine and of my | mother's at his house and refuses to | give it to us.' Mrs. Chaplin said she did not in- | tena to papers ford unz try her case in the new but that she could not af- permit his statement to go nswered.
